Went to get the inspection on the CJ yesterday. Noticed when the guy drove it into the bay the brake lights didn't come on.(BTW they passed me even without the brake lights working. Think he only checked the horn).

So get home and check, no brake lights. Thought it was the switch.

I'm old and fat so have to take the seat out to twist myself up to get to the switch. Finally get the switch out. Test the switch with my meter. Switch test good. Button in no noise, button out noise.

Turn signals work fine, E flasher works fine, taillights work fine. Didn't check the fuse because everything else works.

What am I missing?

Bulbs ? Grounds back there ?

Bulbs are all good as the e flashers, tail lights and turn lights work. There are only 2 bulbs, one brake turn stop and reverse. When I did the frame off, I ran grounds back to the lights, and again, all other light functions work, just can't get brake lights to come on. Tried running a wire from one connector terminal to the other, basically doing what the switch does, and nothing. The only other thing I can think of is the turn signal switch went bad. I really don't want to go through pulling the wheel and all and replacing the turn sig switch only to find that's not the problem.

Yeah. Mine has never stopped working. Only the plastic inside has broken

Well after testing all I could test, split the turn signal connector, and putting it back together, brake lights work.

Brake lights are routed through the turn signal switch.
Work the lever up and down a couple dozen times to clean the contacts.
Dirty contacts will affect brake lights.

Going to get some contact cleaner. Think the problem is between the year old turn signal connector and the 35 year old harness side connector.

Do use that. It will damage the plastic.
