Having an electrical problem with my '85 CJ7 ... I am getting no spark from either the coil or distributor. I have replaced the pickup plate, coil, and ignition module over the past 4 days and still nothing. I have good power on the positive side of the coil and get the flash on the tach side when a test light is used, but no spark. I have checked all the grounds I can find and still nothing. I am about ready to push my jeep off of a cliff!!!! CAN ANYONE HELP?????????

Re you getting spark to at the end of the coil wire leading to the Distributor?

All i get from the coil is one spark... Then i have to turn the key off and crank again to get one more spark. I AM DUMBFOUNDED!!!!

sounds like you need to check the wiring
get a wiring diagram and makes sure all is correct

Since the electrical path is absolutely straight from the battery to the distributor, I would trace the voltage at each component. Looking for voltage drop at every step.

For instance, touch the leads of your multimeter to the battery posts and measure the voltage. Now, touch the battery terminals - clamps. Did the voltage drop? If so, you are looking at a bad connection.

Now, move to the next step in the flow of electricity - here is where your diagram will be valuable. Take it one step at a time and I bet you will be on the problem in no time.

Have you considered a HEI replacement? Might beat spending a ton on stock parts.

just replaced the ingition module... still nothing

Not to drag up and old thread, but I'm running into a no start no spark issue. I've got a spark tester on the #2 plug and get nothing. Looking at the coil, I have a spark plug wire that goes from the center to the distributor cap.

I have a smaller wire that goes to the coil from under the distributor cap. This is on the right side of the coil as you are looking at the coil from the passenger side.

There is a wire coming of the left terminal that goes to a weird block on the side of the engine block and has a wire coming out of it going to the wiring harness and disappearing.

Can somebody explain how this setup works? I've never seen anything like this and I would assume the left terminal would be grounded to the block.

EDIT:
Here are some pics that show what I am talking about.

The block on the side of the engine is the ballast resistor. It drops the voltage on the + side of the coil down to around 8V. There should be two wires to the + side of the coil. One comes from the afore mentioned ballast resistor. There should also be a wire that comes from the second small terminal (marked I) on the starter solenoid that bypasses the ballast resistor when starting.
