OK finally bought a 1980 CJ7 with a 258ci 6 cylinder with 105,000.0 miles and a fiberglass tub. This is my 4th CJ and with the front end so tight and lack of rust on the frame it's believable. It sat for a long while and was a primary hunting vehicle in southern Ga. If this is posted the wrong area please move it, I have a few issues and will be spreading them to the proper threads(forums).
First where you put the oil in the valve cover it is vented and oil seems to leak from there. It's about a 6" extension above the cover. Is this supposed to be vented or a cap? Also I was told yesterday the dipstick isn't the original and is short so it may be overfilled. I will be changing the oil and filter in the next two days to see.
1) I also need the grommet that holds in the PCV valve the one there is swollen and loose and the PCV valve bottoms out.
2) Many of the vacuum lines are plugged because some PO put on an after market air filter that's no bigger than a softball.
Where can I get an original and will a cover from any 258ci engine with a one barrel fit so I am not calling junk yards asking for a specific year?
Other than this it runs very well.

On to the Auto Transmission , my first Auto. Is it hard to adjust the linkage? It sit in the 2 spot when Driving and is hard to get in Park, runs out of room.

Thanks to all that have done more than me!

Pictures really help, It looks like that oil filler tube was made to stop heavy blow by from spitting out. I think having it vented would be good. Larger air cleaners can be purchased at an auto parts store. Adjusting an auto Transmission should be on a YouTube video.

Starting with the engine. How many miles on it? I would do a compression and leak down test.
Tranny- when was the last time the tranny had it's filter and fluid changed?
T'linkage, look for loose/sloppy linkage points. X2 on Google search and you-tube.

Odometer says 105,000.0 miles, bought it from an older gentleman who says he was second owner, first was a friend of his of 40 yrs. and they used it to hunt in Ga. He said it sat a lot especially the last few years, he's in his mid 70's and can't hunt any longer. With the front end being so tight and lack of rust on the frame I can believe it. Runs and like a top.

Getting the tranny fluid changed this week, doing an oil change and filter this weekend also. I was told the dip stick isn't the right one. May have the Transmission shop do the linkage adj while it's there. He's a good guy and has done work for me as well as a few friends.

May as well do a comp. test.
What would that have to do with the oil leaking or blowing out?

Thank you.

Comp test and leak down test will tell you what needs to be done.
Do you know what oil weight is in the engine now? I have run only Castrol 20W50 in mine for 32+ years. Have 116K miles on my engine, and have never been inside more than to reseal the valve cover.

No clue what's in it now. The dipstick I ordered should be here Mon or Tue really don't want to run it not knowing exactly how much oil is in it.
No taps or anything but just a worry wart is all.
I'll get back on the comp. test.
Thank you again.

If it's a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /6cyl. Get a Wix filter from NAPA and add 5 1/2-6 qts of oil.
I run 6 qts in mine because I lean over a bunch when jeep'n the canyons out here. I want to be sure the oil pickup is submerged..
BTW: I your bio you list a 87 cj. There ain't no such thing.

Thanks for the Catch it's supposed to be 1980. This one

OK did an oil change today and marked a different oil dip stick(I was told the one I had was the wrong one). There was at least 2-3 quarts to much oil in it. I added 6 full qrts. and had the smaller filter. Drained at least 9 qrts. I think that may have been the oil all over the place problem.
Now to power wash everything.

OH heck yes a 50% overfill will blow out oil.
Good find.
