Can anyone tell me what the v-notch above the rear wheels is for?

Old style top bows. Left-over from earlier models. I believe it was an M38A1 thing.

My CJ5 is an 80 and does not have that feature so I'm guessing it must have been part of the 1976 changes.
What else got changed for 76?

Wow, let's see...off the top of my head...

1) Windshield became laid back further, narrower at the top, and moved the wiper motor to the inside.
2) different front parking lights and rear tailights.
3) steering column and wheel
4)seats, frame and cushions.
5)dash layout
6) heater controls
7) windshield latches turned to knobs
8)roll bar
9)deleted
10)floor pan shape, especially over the tranny.
11) Door mounting brackets changed.
12) frame became wider towards the back
13)fuel tank filler neck became narrower
14) deleted
15) cowl vent grille changed size
16) deleted
17)tranny options changed
18) tool box under passenger seat was eliminated.
19) Windshield hinges no longer slotted for quick removal (I think)
20) Leaf springs changed dimensions

Okay, I took care of the easy ones. 20 seemed like a nice round number.

My 76 has a drop tail gate, Dana rear end and no shoulder straps;)

Thats why AMC stands for ALL MAKES COMBINED. Even they couldn't keep their years straight!

So scratch #9, #14, and #16!

Actually, I'll go along with the tailgate. The change took place with the CJ7 . And I'll go along with the seatbelts because that was just a guess. But I think there may have been a pretty good chance that somebody swapped axles in your CJ. All the 76's I have seen had model 20's. Of course you could have had a leftover. I am not a "guru" on cj specifications. But now I am curious. Are your rear springs wider than your fronts? Is your frame wider in the back?

Now that I have a 73 CJ5 I can really see there were huge differences. They should have renamed it the model CJ5 1/2 or something.
