Odd VIN digit

For some reason I was sitting here cruising the site with my coffee this morning, and ran across the VIN decoder charts. Got me to wondering what mine started it's life as...... so I took a pic of the VIN plate and started decoding. Everything came out like I had been told, with the exception of the Transmission . According to the VIN, it stared out as a Jeep (duh), 1980 CJ7 with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 2bbl carb, heavier suspension, and the sequential serial..... according to the chart, the Transmission code should be an A, an F, or an M..... Mine shows a D.... What the heck?

IIRC-'D' was also code for an auto.

That makes sense then - and explains the auto steering column it came with...... that is now gone LOL

What a shame! Somebody threw away a good automatic Transmission for another pedal to push. Wait till you get to be my age, you may wish it was an auto.

I haven't driven a straight drive for 15 years or so - 14 of those were in a 78 Bronco. I'm ready for a peddle pusher. I'm sick of being able to steer, eat, and talk on the phone all at the same time LMAO
