oil pan gasket install

Hi,

Anybody out there replaced the oil pan gasket on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ?
I want to do it without pulling the engine. Do I have to undo the motor mounts, or timing cover? Is this even do-able in my home shop without a lift?

On a CJ you need to put a jack under the bellhousing, disconnect the right motor mount, then raise the motor up enough to remove the pan.

you can drop the pan enough to replace the gasket without taking any motor mounts loose its tight but doable. no you don't need to remove the timing chain cover. use a good gasket like this one from felpro. Advance Auto Parts: Oil Pan Gasket Set by Felpro - Part OS34308R

Finally got this done yesterday. I had to remove the starter and right side motor mount to get at a couple of the pan bolts. I used the rubber Felpro gasket but had to remove the curved part on the very back of the pan to make it all fit. A bead of rtv fixed that up just right.
