My 85 CJ7 straight six just started having oil pressure problems. Replaced sending unit and gauge. Pressure when cold is about 38-40 but falls to about 20 when heated up and fluctuates down to 10 every once in awhile thereafter, with no real reaction to increased RPMs. Anything to check before changing the oil pump? and What kind of job am I looking at? Seems pretty simple.

You might want to try checking with a mechanical gauge first.

Messing with the one wire lead to the sending unit through the looms, up to and at the firewall, the gauge inadvertently started working again. Pretty much verifies it isn't a mechanical problem. If it acts up again, I will delve into the wiring/electrical aspect further. Checking with a mechanical gauge before just going down the line buying new parts is good advice. My next stop was buying a pump, and would have been a waste, just like the new dash oil gauge I now have.

Loose, dirty, inadequate grounds are a very common problem on CJ's. Glad to hear you didn't tear into the engine for nothing.
