I wonder if any of you historians could tell me which model (s) and year (s) when the 60/40 bench seat was used for front seating. I owned a couple CJs over the last 40 years but have never seen a setup like that.

I took a pic of it and you can see it does fit an early CJ with the mounts that are there. I think its pretty cool and something very few jeepers would have.

I'm not sure what year they started, but it was a Flat Fender.View attachment 1590

the 60/40 was a popular option for many years, I cannot name them all but I know the book, A Standard catalog of Jeep, list that option in a bunch of years.

Thx guys, I guess I've been under a rock for a few years. Never heard or seen of any before. Its across the country and the cost of the seat plus the shipping would be probably be crazy money. Then to recover and hope the springs are ok. But, I haven't made up my mind up so we'll see. The seats that were in my project were out of some off the wall car. They don't belong and I'll have to replace anyway and fabricate some seat mounting brackets. I assume the seats in a 73 were the short ones. I searched the pics of 73s and most have the low back seats in them. I guess they changed to high backs in 76 or so. Thx again.

The bench was a fairly rare option. Your 73' could have been bench or bucket, but low back either way. BTW I'm almost sure the highback seats started in 1980. My dad bought a Renegade new in 1976 & it had lowback Levi (Edition) 's denim seats.

The low back seats were the same seats used in the late 70’s early 80’s chevy work van. Not the easiest thing to find but a lot easier than a CJ. Back in the day there were a couple of custom van shops that would buy a stripped van with one bucket and replace that with captains seats and in general pimp the interior out. The upside was the pull outs were brand new, in assorted colors and a pair would cost me anywhere from $25 to a case of Bud. Depending on when I went shopping, Friday afternoon was the best time.
I found a pair a couple months back at a grave yard and had them re covered, they replaced a couple of springs and some padding and used my material. The bill was about $200 not counting the boat fabric. This may sound a bit steep but take a look at the assortment of after market junk that may bolt to the seat frame but just does not set the same as the original. Would you believe they tell you what the maximum waist size is to fit some of these replacement seats? I :dung: you not!!

I don't wish to buy the after market type seats so I'll keep looking for the older ones. If I remember right from my 59, the seats and frame were one piece. So to be original, I have to buy the older ones. My old car seats that the po installed were just bolted to the floor and then welded. I had to cut the seats out during the tear down. It will all come together soon. I'll find something for seats and I have a few months before I need to worry about them. I did see tonight, theres a guy in Manor, Texas, which is fairly close to me, that has two CJ5 for sale on craigslist for $950. I can see in the pic that he might have the seats. I'll try to talk him to selling them to me without having to buy two more jeeps, haha. Like that could happen......Thx

Shipping is cheaper thru Greyhound buslines- seller drops off at the nearest depot-you pick it up at the nearest depot. I shipped a CJ3a cowl firewall dash assy for $53 from GA to NM.

Might just make these seats worth buying.

Jeeper50-Great idea, never thought of that. The company that had the seats really didn't want to sell them I guess. I asked alot of questions about their condition and he never did answer them. I also asked whether he could take less for them and, again, no answer. He just told me the shipping would be around $200. I just blew him off. However, the Greyhound idea is something I'll keep in the back of my mind for future. Thx

what a great idea. I mean some truck frieght items need a business address, this could get around that and take advantage of lower rates.

it cost less than the bucket seats originally in the tux park. I think they're pretty cool restro part.

I've seen several "Tux Parks" with the "Split Bench Seat" like the "Surry Jeeps".
