I thought about a pump system but decided to go with CO2. 10lb tank, 10 to 20lbs in a 33" tire in about 14 seconds, 40 times for $25 a tank fill and the whole system was $250. It's portable and will put out about 220 psi to run tools.

Better put a regulator on or you be kill'n tools PDQ. Should not run tools above 90psi.
Also-Check with you local gas supply house and see if they have any issues fill'n that tank.
FWIW: I though about the CO2 deal-Glad I installed the compressor instead.

Yes - it does have an adjustable regulator and the local shop will fill it.

I think long run the on board is a better solution but probably $400 by the time it's all said and done. And yes, I'll spend that on refills eventually. ;)

No-not at all.
In fact-Longer life than the York, with less moving parts due to it's rotary design.
I have installed both types for friends and the pluming is the same. They work the same.

Yes Lumpy, most of the system is the very same, no argument there. Longevity in a system that will be used infrequently is a moot point at best. Not sure about the oil return issue I know it will work.
 
On my style compressor. There's a thin, "O" ring'd hex nut on top that gives me access to ck'n oil level. I made a dip-stick from a steel coat hanger and make sure there's at least a 1/4"-5/16" of oil on the bottom of the comp.
I use the same Castrol 20W-50 oil that I use in the Jeep's engine.
The biggest deal today is finding the compressor mount for the compressor you choose.
I was lucky and found everything I need'd at a AMC bone yard some 25+ years ago. Sadly-that placed is now gone-:(
The compressor I'm using, was the same type used for the A/C option with my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
On board air is one of the very best mods I have done to my Jeep. :banana:

i've been doing research on this for a little while now.(haven't done it yet because of lack of funds) but this guys got a pretty good system and a good write up. he does a pretty good job of explaining the pros and cons of each compressor. there's even a couple of vids that explain stuff a little better linked to in his write up.

his welder idea looks pretty good util you realize he has half an alternator hanging out of the housing. but you fix that and it to seems like a good system.
 
Rasor, thats not a bad layout, It does not show the air inlet at the compressor and the oil separator drain could come from the air inlet and air flow coming into it should be restricted. Otherwise it looks pretty good. I do like where the tank inlet and the disconnect are at oppisite ends to help keep the oil that gets through the system out of the tires, which puts the first disconnect in a poor location. I am not much on welders but have seen them save a few butts on the trail. My $.02

For many years, I have carried 15' "jumper-cables" made from 4/0 arc welding cables with copper connectors.
I also carry in a sealed PVC container containing various diameters of 6013('mud rod')arc welding rods.
What works very well is to have 2 starter batteries connected in either series or parallel(depending on the job). Then use the different rod diameters to match the metal thickness etc.

I don't. Remember where but if you watch the vids. Even though he doesn't show the inlet side. he does explain how the oil recirculates back into it pretty well.
