OK in a thread about a bought tub, we were trying to place the year, and it had no tailgate cut out.
Well I stated all tubs till 76 were the same. I, after soem research found I was wrong
According to Peter foster, in the extremely well researched book A Standard Catalog of Jeep, he states that in 1972 the option appeared on CJs for the tub to have no rear cutout for a tailgate and the tire mounted on the rear.

I stand corrected and offer my apology for being swell headed.

Funny as hell, I posted at the very beginning I had no tailgate.
People still insisted they all had them. My CJ7 I had of the same year
did have a tail gate however.

Who knew my old '79 CJ5 may have been special with it's no tail gate, LOL.

Baja and I both agreed that there were no tailgates on some. We just thought it was 76 and up. My 78 CJ5 doesnt have one and Cj almost convinced me I was wrong. Old Dog proved us wrong year wise with the pic he posted. I will say all Cj -7s had a tailgate. If you have one that doesnt its either fiberglass or aluminum and of course aftermarket.

Had me looking to, I was like damn maybe someone welded it up.
But I never returned to the thread to continue the fight, LOL.
No tail gates! no tail gates! no tail gates!

funny thing about Jeep is that they have options on some that are not year correct, but the vin is that year. Have seen it a lot. Some books claim that is because they used to sell till parts bins were empty.
I cannot answer it. I have read several times that they made no change in the tub till 76, then while researching about the side tank filler indent, I find out about the tail gate. So I was still wondering about the side filler, Seems I have a picture in a book of a 79 with the indent, so did they ever gt rid of the indent?
Kinda like the indent in the hood that was a stand over from the old military high water fording kit, they claim they stopped that a certain year but guys with later year Jeeps still have them. I think it was 66 (don't quote me) I have a 67 without it and I know of a guy with a 68 with it.
So, knowing so many after market parts are on these vehicles, sometimes we can get kinda complacent with our knowledge, I did, and so I openly admit it.
OK, this brings up the question, Did Jeep ever stop the side indent for the filler and what year?
It also teaches me that no mater how much I study about these vehicles, as soon as I think I know something is fact, I get proven wrong... Sheesh I am about to lose my Shaman standing.

I thought I was wrong once... but I was mistaken. :D

I think we're all about getting right for the integrity of the site. Even if that means admitting we were wrong. ;)

I understand. I am just amazed.

And once, I was told that men would never admit to being wrong unless Hell had indeed froze over, so therefore I had to ask...

That and give ya'll a little :dung: :)

First Susie it feels like hell has frozen over where I'm at, Second........I told you so, I told you so... Na Na...:p

But My 79 CJ5 didn't have a tailgate :D.
