have there been things done to the suspension?? shackles, spring over axle mods??

Neer as i can figure this is what i have:
Tranny - T-5
rear - Dana 20
frounr - Dana 30
Transfer Case - Dana 300
suspencion 2.5" leaf spring lift but it is not over top the axel just extra leafs.
Tires - 31x10.50
i was thinking about going back to stock hight to help solve the prob but no its to cool at the hight it is now.

hI. IO i THINK i AM DOING THIS RIGHT ... NOT REAL GOOD ON COMPUTERS i HAVE A 2.5" SUSPENSION LIFT NO SPRING OVER JUST EXTRA SPRINGS AND 31X10.50 TIRES FROM WHAT I CAN TELL. OTHER THAN THAT IT IS PRITTY MUCH STOCK .
AMC 150CU. (2.5L)
T-5 TRANNY
Dana 20 REAR
Dana 30 FRUNT
Dana 300 Transfer Case
ANY SUGESTIONS? i WAS THINKING ABOUT GOING BACK TO STOCK HIGHT BUT ... IT'S JUST TO COOL TO DROP DOWN JUST YET.

read through this thread before you start making changes, there is alot of good info. You will need ot know what is correct before you you can fix what is bad.

Hi, IO went over my jeep this week end and mad an ajustment on the steering box. Turns out the box was brand new and haden't bin ajusted yet. After a few ajustments we got her under control, but it still seams to be verry Quick to steer. No real sway just quick. Is this normal? Or can I do more to help the prob. go away? Tie rods are good , U joints are tite and no real visibal ware on any thing. I have a full rap leaf spring suspention lift but at full turn that rap seams to drift a little to the side but does not hit anything. Is this normal? Thanks for the help.

Eric here with a question on my suspention again. As I stated before I have a 2.5" suspention lift on my Jeep. It was pointed out to me that I do not have a drop in my pitman arm could this be the couse of my twitchy steering? If it is how much drop do I need or is there a way to figure it out?

Can't say if the pitman is the source of your problems but doubt it, at 2-1/2" it's been said that it's not nessesary. I would look at the caster if I were you, assuming you have eliminated worn out parts and your toe adjustment.

there would be no need for a drop pitman, the lift isn't high enough. Is the quick turn the only issue? is it a stock replacement? You said it was new, it could be a quick ratio, which will give a very different feel.

Thanks for the responce. When I bought the Jeep The guy sead he had just put the lift on. When I went over it with a friend every thing looked new and there were no worn out parts that we could find we went over it very well and did ajust the steering box. How do I know what the steering ratio is ? Sasquach sead to look at something I'm not real shure what he is talking about.Sorry I'm just learning with your help.thanks again:confused:

Caster,it is talked about in TDHofstetters sticky http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f19/troubleshooting-correcting-your-steering-4106/ It would contribute to wandering but worth checking as is everything in the write up.

Hay I had posted this thread last year and got away from the site for so loung that I forgot my password. But with the help of a new friend "Wreck" and an old friend "CJ" I am back!!!! After a loung time and alot of questions I found the simpel solution "BAD POWER STEERING PUMP" it would kick in and out and couse unstable steering and wounder down the road. New tires made a big difference as well. I never had a leck on out of my pump but the berrings were bad. I diden't know if anyone was still looking at this post or not but I wounted to let you know PROBLEM SOULVED!:chug:

That's one of those things about our shared love affair with the fickle mistress Jeep CJ.
Every Day is an Adventure!

Glad it all came together for you, and found your way back here in the process :chug:

I to am glad to be back. I love to drive my jeep as much as possable and fixing the little things makes it moor enjoyable. my daughter age 15 doesn't understand the relationship I have with my Jeep. but I told her that she will have to learn how to drive it if she ever wounts to get het drivers licence becouse it is the only car we have thats a standered tranny and I belive that everyone should know how to drive a stick. she will be tacking her drivers test in a CJ! Question; how wide can I go with my tires without having rubbing problems. I have a 2.5" suspention lift? thanks

I'll hijack this thread besides creating a new one for the same topic. I have just purchased a 79 CJ7 and 82 CJ7 . The 79 seems to jump left to rght when I go over a pothole. There is no power steering from what I can tell. I know nothing about whats under the bonnet. How do I know if/what steering gear box I have. Its impossible to do a 3 point turn on a narrow road, takes about 7 turns. I wondering if I should install power steering or just get/change steering gears or both. Or just get a mechanic to look at it. Im in Ireland and most mechanics wont touch it unless it has a computer onboard.
