A lot. The actual painting isn't what runs the bill up. It's all the prep before they spray the color on.
At $3 a can approximately $18. Sorry no help here but like Hack said the prep is what drives up the labor cost. And without good prep you won't have good paint. If you can do any of the prep yourself it would really pay off.

- 1979 CJ5 Renegade 258, t-18 pretty much stock except for a later model aluminum intake manifold and Gronk 2150.
We painted ours olive drab. The paint was about $60 and we sprayed it in a carport we wrapped in clear. Show quality? Nope. It's a Jeep.

- 1979 Jeep CJ7 TH400 Automatic 258 I6 Quadratrac Amc 20 rear & Dana 30 front, 32 x 11.5 x 15 tires. Currently a Complete Custom Rebuild in progress.
Also I own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, White, all stock with 4.0L. automatic, and police package. Best part of that is it came with leather seats! This package also has the NP242 Transfer Case, 8.25 rear end, and trailer towing package.
I painted my Jeep Trailer the same way I'll paint my Jeep. 
I prepped it myself, and yes that is a lot of work, 
but doable. I then sprayed it with a ceramic urethane that I got from Eastwood. It has turned out to be very durable. 
When I do the Jeep I will top coat it with a clear. I did not do that to the trailer. Keep in mind that I have a large high volume air compressor. 
I also purchased a couple of spray guns. It is messy. You need to build a booth (I didn't do this for the trailer) if you don't have access to one, and you need the proper safety equipment. But when your done, you have something you can be very proud of.

I paint all my own stuff but as far as what you will pay to have someone else do it you get what you pay for. But as everyone else has said you will save alot if all they have to do is paint it. And a Base coat Clear coat will stand up the best.

Like I posted, I have way too much money in this project. And that's with me doing a hell of a lot of work before it went to the shop.
I can't do bodywork/paint. Don't have the time/space/tools/skill. And don't have the ability to acquire any of them.

My line of work has gotten me involved in painting 
. There are a lot of variables to it. yes body work is the labor intensive part. prep is the key. What paint you use is another. base/clear.. single stage.. acrylic enamel... poly urethane... etc. There is an online paint store called "the coating store. com". I've used their products and they are comparable to the "good" brands. I recommend a single stage polyurethane for many reasons. 1 being it can be matched and blended easier. jeeps get scratched. it also holds up well against scratches. 2 Unless you go with a Premium clearcoat it will not only lose its uv protection but it will yellow over time... Just a thought.... The more the paint cost the more the mark up on price is... If u pay someone... SPEND the money required. They will not more than likely redux it at no cost... go with quality reputation..... By the way $4000 to $6000 range in georgia gets a jeep a good quality paint job... show cars $10k and up! And up!

I have to disagree with some of this first when you have a clear coat it will protect the base coat and as you get fine scratches you can sand and buff them out. With out the clear unless it's a solid color meaning there is no metallic in it you can not do this. And second I have never seen a clear coat yellow it would have to be some real cheap stuff. This is my truck that I painted almost 11 years ago using a base coat clear coat that I bought on line from House of Colors and it still looks as good as the day it was done.My line of work has gotten me involved in painting

Thanks guys! It seems like it's been one step forward and ten steps backward with this project... A lot of it was my own doing, as I changed directions a number of times during the build. There was a periord of time, that I was just going to 'give it away', as I was not going to be able to finish it. It was either get rid of it, or pay a shop to finish it. When I was retired, I had the time. Just not the money. Going back to work (rotating days off, shift work), I had the money. But not the time. I went with the shop option, because I'm one of those guys that hates to not finish something I start. Was it the best choice? I can't answer that right now.
Still not on the road, so to speak, but I'm hoping to get it back before the 4th of July. Still have a few issues that need to be addressed before she comes back home. Paint is among them. I paid way too much for the bodywork/paint to accept anything less than near-perfect.

mtnwhlr. The OEM clear coat on our Jeeps has a yellow tint.
