Ok hoping to get a new paint job this spring on my 1980 CJ7 . As much as I would like to do the work myself I don't have the time between my job and a 6month old. Wanted to see if anyone could give me a ballpark figure on what I am looking at for a good quality paint job. I have a little surface rust and the usual dings on the body of a jeep but no major work. Also should I look for a certain certification at a body shop that will help me find a good one without any knowledge of the local body shops?

Also let me know your favorite looking at going with the original 1980 color of Navy Blue or a deep burgundy

I would go Navy blue thats just my opinion im a blue kinda guy, i plan on painting my jeep and frame and possibly block my self im thinking grabber green and sky or royal blue or vise versa but im guessing for a paint job its gonna be around 1000-2500 im not 100% i would have to talk to my dad because i know when he painted his rig himself it was 500 for paint alone and then depending on the hours of labor for the prep work and rust patch im guessing 2000 sounds right. correct me if im wrong guys which i think i am lol :)

I gotta vote for the deep maroon myself , but I think more will go for the blue. As for estimates on the price , I hope you have deep pockets. Depending on what quality level your looking for , good paint can get quite pricey. Id look for places around that do hot rods and such , basically they have to do quality work to survive. The prep work is where its at. The more you do yourself the less expensive it is as long as you do it right. Good luck and shop around.

The shop I went to allowed me to do most of my own prep work and it saved me a ton but it was fiberglass and didn't need much sanding. Don't forget that the maroon is in the red spectrum and will cost you more just for paint. Red pigment is one of the most expensive colors to buy. My white cost $50 a gallon and my exwifes Jeep was plum crazy purple which cost $400 a gallon

Any spectrum of red will cost lots more than any other color. I shot mine myself, for about 400 bucks. I used PPG Concept paint.

Coldwater why don't I just pay you 400.00 plus a case of beer and that would solve all my problems :) Thanks for the replies I was leaning toward blue anyway and with what you are telling me on the cost difference sounds like an easy choice now. I will start shopping around in the next couple of months and keep everyone updated!

Had some real squawks of protest around here when I mentioned painting the Jeep. And it wasn't about cost or color. The wife, daughter and granddaughter thought it would destroy its character! "It's a Jeep! It's supposed to look that way! We like it the way it is!"

Since I'm not too fond of my own cooking, guess I'll have to wait.

You will really just have to get some estimates.Prices vary widely around the country and people often don't realize how much work can be involved.People often think they just need a little sanding when they really need extensive stripping and old body work redone to get a good job.....other times they don't need a lot of work but only someone who knows what they are doing and looking at in person can tell you.

What you intend to do with the jeep should also be considered. It doesn't make much sense to spend thousands at the hotrod shop if you're going to spend 50-75% of your time on the trail scratching it up nor does it make sense to get a $300.00 scuff and shoot if you're going to stay on the pavement and enter every car show you can.

imbobbbb said it best. So many factors to consider. Body work can add up fast. Find a good body guy and have him do that for you. Paint it yourself and you will save yourself some cash. ppg concept is a great product. Go withh a high quality clear and your paint will last a long time. Dont think you need a Hot Rod shop unless your planning on car shows only

So all that being said, for black paint with no fancy hot rod finish with the prepwork done, what are we looking at in price?

And i know i'm probably being like a lot of people, just waiting/asking around until somebody throws out a number that i want to hear...

How about fifty bucks? At first I thought this was a joke: moparts: paint job on a budget!?

Scroll down until you see the orange Charger avatar. I followed links and compiled a lot of the different suggestions into one document.

Makes sense--when boat owners do this with gelcoat they call it "tip and roll".
