I had my CJ5 in the shop getting some brake work done and asked the mechanic if he could reinstall the parking brake. I thought that the PO had cut the cables out and he said he could hook new cabling up pretty quickly, so I thought I'd let him do it while it was on the lift. Today he told me that there was no hardware in the brakes to hook the cables. He also said he couldn't find any of the parts because the dealer doesn't carry AMC parts. He suggested I track them down myself and he can install them. Unfortunately, I don't know what I'm looking for. Is there any sort of parking brake "kit" on the market. I checked a number of sites but didn't find anything primarily because I didn't know what I was looking for in the exploded diagrams.

tell them what you want and they will go get it for you , they have acres jeeps

Thanks, but the problem is that I don't know what to get. Any ideas on where I can get an exploded view of my brake system? The manual is worthless.

thistle3585, as a suggestion, you could adapt to another style of e-brake. I think the best one I have seen is where an old Volkswagen hand brake was used in place of the foot operated oem system. It worked great as a hill holder.

Thanks. I have the foot system inside but am only missing the hardware in the wheels. I am really only using it for parking. I have always had an aversion to leaving the Jeep in gear on a hill.

Well, I just printed off the parts diagram from Morris, that bondo258 posted, and took it to the mechanic and he circled everything for me to order. I'm waiting to find out from him if its a 10" or 11" brake system so I know which parts to order. Morris has the parts divided by 72-78 and 78-86. Unfortunately, my Jeep was built in December of 78 but the title says its a 79. Not sure what the actual year should be. Is there a way to tell off the VIN?

Measure the inside of the drum. Different axles came with different brake sizes, but I don't know them. try searching differential cover shapes to ID your axle. That can make your search easier, if not wanting to pull the drum off.

Ordering parts solely based on vin, year and what "the book" say it should have can be bad at times. People often swap major parts on CJ's.
