Photobucket has decided to hold all my photos hostage. It's a shame they have resorted to this tactic, and a potential loss for all who post helpful images to these threads.

At $399 annually, I won't be paying the ransom....

I wonder if that was the plan all along to do this once everyone was entrenched into their system they could real you in for the money!

Is it related to how many pictures you are storing? My pictures still work, but I see where pictures no longer show up both here and on other forums.

Bummed to hear this, got over a 1000 pics on PB with the vast majority being Jeep/Jeep trip related. I'm sure PB will somehow try and make it difficult to move the pics to another host too...

I was just reading their terms of service. If I am reading it correctly, it appears that if you exceed your free account space, your account is immediately suspended, and you will have to join one of their paid subscriptions in order to reinstate your account. I see nowhere that you can delete pictures or 3rd party hosting images to bring your account back within their limits. If that were possible, we could all just use another image hosting service for future images, and all the Photo Bucket images would remain where ever they were originally put. To me this is a very shady way of doing business. They made full use of the "fine print" way of doing things. It would have been nice to receive notification that we were about to exceed our limit, or how about when someone reaches their limit, no more photos will show up on 3rd party sites, but everything prior to that is still available. But no. Photo Bucket uses unethical means to force people to join if they want to have their images available on forums. $400? Not from us! If I have to, I will repost our entire build thread using thumb nails. Not as nice to view in my opinion, but I am not sure what else to do. Maybe this whole thing will blow up in PB's face and they will reconsider? :biggun::dunno::barf:

Unfortunately I doubt they will reconsider. Maybe if no one goes for the ransom they may come down in the price some. I imagine they will go down with the ship before giving people back their photos

If you can log into PB and see your pics, you should be able to download them. If when you log in you cannot see them, but only the stupid "sorry" icon, they are probably irretrievable. Downloading would be a time consuming task, but it would be better than losing them for good. Hack - log into PB and see if your pics are still accessible.........

My photos are all view-able. I can download them to my own computer. The issue is with posting to what PB refers to as '3rd party sites'. Any photos that have been linked to forums, etc., are no longer view-able. The original poster, would need to go back to every single post that had a linked photo in it, and either upload to the sites server. Or re-link to another photo hosting site. Which may end up charging for the service in the future.

This totally screws anyone that might be looking for answers to questions, or ideas, or whatever. Historically, those posts will not show any of the linked pictures.

$400 per YEAR?!?!? Is that right? I can see $5 a year but not $400 each and every year I want viewers to see my posts. This is like what ransomware hackers do, rob people.

"Is anyone else surprised Photobucket didn't demand the payment to be made in Bitcoin"

That was one remark on Twitter.

Well, they got me - I went to their terms of use page - it states the free account allows NO third party hosting........ Jerks. My problem is, I wasn't prepared for this and did not back up my thread as a Word document. Text is good, but the order of photos - that'll be fun...... guess I'll start rebuilding in Word....

Ok - This won't be quite as painful as I thought..... I went to the first page of my build thread, opened the link to the he first forbidden pic, and it still took me to the correct photobucket pic - so all they've done is prevent it from showing up anywhere else. I will go thru and add a description of each pic numbered sequentially as they appeared in the thread, find a new hosting site, and rebuild. This might take a couple beers, but at least it's doable.

I save all my pictures using dropbox. From what I see it stores them but they stay on your computer so if they crash or shutdown they are still there on your computer.
I only use PB on a few sights that won't let you directly post pictures in your thread. This sight allows attachments so it's not to bad.

I have everything that was on PB, they just severed the third party hosting ability. The biggest problem I have is I have to open each blocked link to see what pic it was. I think it was oldjeeplady that said they back their threads up as a word document - very smart idea. I just started doing the same LOL.

Never had much luck hosting pics here, and even if I could, if we all did that it would tank the server(s). On to find a good, reliable hosting site.......

Yes it took me awhile but someone here told me how to do it. To post attachments here you have to unsecure the website.

Hmmmm - most of my posts are from in iPad - may hafta switch over to the laptop.... don't know if I can get to the option on the ipad.

This is so aggravating!
First Photobucket demanded $400 a year to post your pictures just about anywhere but on Photobucket. I don't think many people paid their ransom but at that price Photobucket can make a killing with few customers.
The reason I am reviving this thread is because Photobucket is now telling the people that did pay, they are now being asked to pay more.
Photobucket is sending out emails staying:
"Starting October 10th, you will see a discrete 'Proudly hosted on Photobucket'” watermark on any images you display on sites other than Photobucket"
Now they want another $4.03 a month for the images they already charged you for. So the payments keep going up.
Maybe this whole thing will blow up in PB's face and they will reconsider? :biggun::dunno::barf:
I hope you are right but I doubt it. It's like the spammers that send emails that say "You just won a million dollars! All you have to do is pay $1000 registration fee". If these scammers only con one out of 1000 people they still make a killing. The problem is; what Photobucket is doing is legal.
Pay them now and they'll ask for more later.

Google has a free 5 gb of storage. I added the 100 gb for 2.99 mo. Plus you can sync it with your devices as backup.

Heck...office 365 is $90.00 a year with 5 accounts and 1 terabyte storage for each account. accessible from 3 devices each (Table, phone and PC)

True but we're not talking about just storing data in the cloud. We're talking about using a site to display images for a forum such as Jeep-CJ.com. The prices you mentioned are reasonable for what you get (data backup and storage).

Photobucket retroactively says you can't even display your previously displayed images without paying another $400 a year. Now they demand another $48.36 per year with no improvements to their service.

Garbage like this is exactly why I put my images up in the media folder of my personal website and then link to them here when I want to post a picture.
Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive are also good options but I am not sure if you can link to photos from your drive and have them display here. I will try a test.
