Just got my bed I bought into my garage. It is a early 60's stepside without the fenders. After some suggestions and careful thought, I will most likely use the CJ7 's fender wells and modify the bed that way. I'll try to post some drawings and pictures tomorrow.

Here's the bed I got. A couple of rust spots to repair, but in good shape considering these beds are really hard to find down here.

I will mostly incorporate the CJ7 's wheel wells into the bed with a small piece of fender sticking out. That way the top rails will meet up with the side of the cab.

Here is another picture of one of Jeff's projects. I think this might be more along the lines of what Pete has in mind for his bed.

Yeah that's pretty much it. Would've loved to have rear fenders like the Gaucho but I'm just not that talented. :( I have committed the Laredo to be the truck project. I'll get the '82 into daily driver mode next month.

Sign me up for one of those while we're at it!

Pete, I'm sure you could make those. It's only sheet metal, right? :D You've got imagination and patience, you can do some custom fab work like that.

Oh I can fab some up like in the picture. The Gaucho fenders were a lot more complex than the Retro Wrangler posted above. Who knows what I'll have come up with by the time I start cutting.

We have a store down here called Tractor Supply. They have all kinds of trailer parts in there. They also have fenders for trailers. :) They carry a fender just like that only smaller. So I knew what to look for, just had to search the internet for a larger one. I basically have the same type of fender on my Jeep Trailer. ;)

There are a couple of different type of beds out there from older pickups that people use. From Chevy's the 40's to 50's bed has an angled top side rail. The late 50's to 60's Chevy trucks have a flat top side rail. I preferred the flat top side rail. Your mileage may vary. Here are some of the dimensions of the bed I'm using. You can also buy these parts from some place like LMC Trucks, but plan to pay $1000. But, they are brand new.

Here is a really good picture of the back of the Gaucho. This was a used bed that was narrowed to fit and the fenders had to be totally resized while maintaining the look.

I go by a Chevy truck with those fenders every day on the way home from work. The originals are huge.

This one is really starting to grow on me. I could gray together the rear of my Laredos tub with the old Yj tub I have to make the bed. I'd still do the cab a little shorter but it would look eerily similar to this one. I'd put the rail around the top edge like gr8dain mentioned. I'd also make the be hieght match the body line.

Since I got my 60's Chevy stepside bed for my Truck Build, I've been thinking more and more about the fenders. I really don't want to make the bed any smaller than what it is. Right now the inside measurements are 49.5" wide by 78.25" long. If I use the jeep style fender I referenced earlier in this thread, I have 10" in width to play with. The outside edge of the frame at the rear wheels is 38". If I recess my fender to that depth, I will have about 6" inside the bed and 4" outside the bed. That 4" makes it even with the outer edge of the top of the bed. I think that would look really good. ;) It also would make it so that nothing was wider or sticking out beyond the bed and the body. If the tires end up being wider than this, I can add some type of flexible fender flare. :) I should be able to order my fenders sometime next week. In the meantime - more cleaning and sanding to do! :bang:

Can't wait to see it. It's hard to grasp the measurements without looking at a bare frame , bed combo
