1979 CJ5, 304, completely rebuilding it.
So I'm in the garage and got the pilot bearing in and now the spline tool won't fit into it (it did before). I assume it crushed a little when it went in. Is this normal on cjs? If not then I have to get it out and find another one to put in. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!!!

:)Measure your pilot bearing shaft on the input shaft of the Transmission .........
that is more important than spline tool...........if the Transmission will fit then I would chuck the tool up in the lathe and cut it down to install the clutch........If there both the same size and you crushed the pilot bearing then you can if you have the correct sized reamer cut it larger or ...........take it out and chuck it up in the lathe with a boring tool and cut it to size...........It may just have a small burr......perhaps a rat tail file might correct that?

did you put grease in the bearing? if so how much? are you hydraulically blocked?

Seems like about 1/32 of an inch too small maybe slightly more. Fit the tool and shaft prior to pressing it in. Took more force Thani liked to tap it in so I should have stopped. Anyone know the size of the shaft? Can't find my mic and could old measure with a Boring bit to 11/16

1/32" is quite a bit of compression for installing a pilot bearing. Good that you checked it prior to assembly, you didn't hammer it in did you? not really sure what Transmission you have, but I do have a Advance Adapter catalog which does show the spline input diameter. For example if you have the T-150 tranny, it does show a .673" input diameter on the shaft, so the pilot bushing hole should be just larger than that.

is there a "proper" process for installing a pilot bushing?:D

I had the exact same problem when I did my clutch. I sanded down the alignment tool and the fought to get the Transmission in for 2 hours. he input shaft would engage the splines but not go into the pilot bushing. In the end I drilled out the pilot bushing ever so slightly. I drilled it out with it still in the flywheel which is not the right way to do it but it seemed smart at the time and worked. Hope you get it figured out.

I would replace it instead of fighting it, having spent countless hours on pilot bushing issues on my own Jeep.

Attempts to bore or drill out the ID will likely lead to bearing failure because that cutting operating will seal up the pores w/ the oil assuming you are using a bronze bushing (I wouldn't suggest anything else.)

Try freezing the next one and keep it on ice right until you drive it into the crank.

Clog the pores with oil? Not too familiar with this so any info you could provide would be great!

:)I believe he is referring to a type of bronze normally used for this purpose called "Oil-lite" which is a porous bronze that is impregnated with oil for lubrication purposes.
Personally I have made bushings from that raw material before and have never had it plug up once all the chips are blown off. Obviously the use of brake clean or a solvent would not be advisable since that would take the oil out of the material.
