Hi, my Dana 44 is leaking at the pinion. I realize I will have to pull the ujoint ears to replace the seal... Will I be able to replace the bearing from this side or will I have pull the carrier and access the bearing from inside? Really hoping not to have to. Any tips greatly appreciated thanks.

If all you need to do is change out the pinion seal it can be done with out disassembling anything but the driveshaft and yoke. If you can get a new nut for the yoke, it's good to replace it if you can.

Thanks CJ, I have already purchased the bearing and seal and would like to change both. Can I pop the bearing out from the seal side?

The pinion has 2 bearings, one under the seal and one you have to take the pinion out to change.
If the seal is leaking but the bearing isn't shot I'd leave it alone, but thats just me.
Here's a link to help you out http://www2.dana.com/pdf/5310-3.pdf

Thanks Old Dog, that link is great... Hopefully bearing is good and i don't have to dig deeper... Just trying to prepare for how jeep repairs usually go...:)

Hi - The seal is accessible behind the yoke and flange. Be sure to torque the nut back tight to get the proper preload at the bearing. These are set by shims and should not change with just a seal replacement.

Not sure why you mention replacing the bearing. Is it making noise? In any case, you would have to disassemble the ring and pinion to replace the bearings and races. I think the outer bearing is a fairly tight fit on the pinion shaft and usually requires a dead blow mallet to drive the pinion out the back of the case and off the bearing. This is done after the ring gear and diff is pulled free.

Once you change bearings, you will have to check all of the critical clearances and gear patterns to make it work right.

Thanks John, Glad you guys chimed in before I got in over my head... Just thought if it was easy I would swap out the bearing at the same time...
