I recently put a little oil on my leaf springs and I immediately started hearing a popping noise durning hard turns at slow speeds. What is causing it? Did I do something wrong? I assume this sound will go away?

Neat a slow speed hard turn warning system!

It sounds like something that had been Limited by friction has been unlimited by oil. My guess is it will go away sooner or later.

Or it could be something else and just a coincidence.

My brother in law insists too this day that his c6 Transmission self distructed when he ran over a palm tree branch in a parking lot at Home Depot while pulling his 30' 10k pound trailer

Now that's funny. I don't care who you are.

my other all time favorite was the "defective brake fluid "that ruined clutch master and slave cylinders in his ford! Damn defective fluid.

Get some wrenches out and start ck'n ALL the bolts/nuts for tightness.
If all is tight-it's just the spring packs work'n.
BTW: Silicon spray is a much better lube for leaf-springs. ;)

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.

^^ What Torx said. Tighten them up too much and you'll create enough squeakin' and popping you won't notice the popping you're hearing now.

I'm assumming oiling everything up quietened everything down quite a bit. Slow, hard turn popping might be a ball joint or maybe a wheel bearing, depending on how long it's been since you've tinkered on 'em.

It'd be nice if it was no more than a few twists on the U-bolt nuts. My luck just don't run that way........

I would thing some sort of dry lube would be best for springs, I'd use graphite or molybdenum di sulfide for a lube. Exactly how long it would stay I don't know, you don't often hear about lubing flat springs. I have seen plastic inserts at the ends of springs, I imagine those are there to make the spring pack quiet.

Don't think you want a substance that stays 'wet', on any and off-road vehicle.
Silicon spray is 'dry', after the carrier evaps off.

I agree, it doesnt really stay wet for long, kinda dries but leaves a film...
I dont like the corrosive properties you find with silicone. its all a matter of preference.

I would hit the under belly after a 4x4 trip, after a good washing. sometimes it would be weeks before the Cj saw dirt again. so while she sat she soaked up the goods...

I already soaked my new 78, and my JK gets the same bath... best looking underbelly out of all my JK buddies. they laugh and call me out, call her a trailer queen.

Probably not related to spring lube, but that symptom would have me checking front axle u-joints. Classic sound effect when those go south.

Edit:
Ok rear axle-sorry. AMC20 ? Check the hubs.

Yep! Did the same thing...........REAR. Missin' more and more all the time now :(. Oh well, he probably needs to check the front anyhow.

Your source for that info?
Silicon spray helps to prevent corrosion and is a dry lube.
I have use it for decades, with never an issue-
Using Silicone Spray Lubricant and When Not To!

food grade.... yes! my info/source is field testing... i like what i like. you like what you like. I dont drive in the desert.. if you been using any other then FOOD GRADE, id say its might have corrosive properties.. any other point is moot....

Tests/facts say it is NOT corrosive. One of the many reasons it is used on boats ;)

"any other point is moot" :wtf:
