power steering conversion

power steering conversion
So my question is, has anyone tried this conversion on an older CJ5 . Mine is a1971 with the V6 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 and I question every time I see all the "goodies" and "upgrades" that don't seem to apply for my old girl. I lover her but, she don't like to left and right. Also would the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 be able to supply enough power afterwards?

Any advice would be welcome.

The guy that might help here is Jeep-CJ Forums - View Profile: BajaEdition and he has not been part of this thread, you might want to start anew with your model/year. 71 and earlier uses a bellcrank setup right?

Hey I just bought a 77 CJ5 with power steering. The guy I bought it from gave me a box of parts and said it was the tensioner for the power steering pump. I have yet to be able to figure out how to put it on and my wife is complaining about the belt squealing when I turn or the engine gets wound up. Any help would be appreciated. This is my first jeep and I am trying to fix what the other guy couldn't.

there is hope for you
but it is not just as easy as it is for everyone else.
your jeep came with a "Ross" steering system, really complicated and really prone to wear and tear.
First thing is get under the front of your jeep and see if the steering box has been converted to a Saginaw system, or is still the original Ross set up. If the steering box is next to the front drivers front spring mount on the frame. then a conversion has been done and we have a simple way to do it, just like everyone else here. However if the unit has a bellcrank above the center of the front axle, then we have to both convert the steering box to either a Saginaw or Ford reversed gear, convert the steering column and linkage, and then put in the pump and hoses.
So, first question is what kind of steering is in that jeep?

Factory power steering would not have used a tensioner during that year and the pump itself would move to apply the belt tension. Sounds like a possible PO custom and if he gave you the "tensioner in a box" he could'nt make it work either.
Got a picture?

When my Cousin & I did that swap 35 years ago, let me check the CRS memory bank. As I remember you had to fab up a custom frame plate to basically turn your early model drivers side frame rail into a late model so the steering box would bolt up & it was further forward. We used a late model front axle to gain disc brakes.

that is the old way with GM Saginaw box, there is a newer method using the Ford reverse steering box that keeps the box out of harms way now that is also a cleaner install.

I bow to the master.:notworthy:

I am sorry I am very new to "forums" Please forgive me if I do this wrong. I to am looking to convert a 1980 CJ7 , AMC 304 , manual, to power steering from stock manual steering. Are there any aftermarket kits that have been proven to be better than others?

I am not aware of any complete kits and you are going to have to do some part gathering and/or fabrication of at least the pump mount bracket, I fabed mine then later found a factory bracket on Ebay if I decide to use it. I purchased a "kit" from power steering pros online and it was really just a start and included a rebuilt pump, steering box and the hoses( that I never used). After that you still need to mount he pump to the engine a get it driven off the crank/balancer pully, replace the intermidiate steering shaft to accomodate the larger spline on the PS box, replace your pitman arm for the same reason(both of those things are available from 4WD hardware or others) and thats about it.
Might seem like a giant hassle but I's well worth the trouble in my opinion.
Good Luck

I'm looking to convert my 89 YJ 4cyl to power steering. Any ideas on where to get a part list?

Have JY access? Stripping everything off a wrecked unit would be the easiest way if thats an option.
1. PS steering gear box
2. PS pitman arm
3. PS intermediate steering shaft
4. PS pump
5. pump mounting brackets
6. pressure and return hoses
7. belts and pulleys (V or serpentine depending on what balancer you have)

Can I use parts from other jeep models (Cherokee etc) or will it have to be a YJ only?

Some yes and some no, stuff that mounts to the engine(pump brkts.) will need to be off any model that has the same motor as yours does. the steeing shaft will need to be from same model most likely.

Jasper, Can't help you I'm a late style with a 6 but if you start a new thread asking for help with a 74 CJ5 w/ AMC 304 to power steering you may get some responce.

The first one I got for my 73 was a 78 Camaro. What you're looking for is a Saginaw out of a late 70's early 80's. Bolts right up. Find some a AMC 304 in the junkyard and get the brackets. Just make sure the pump and gear have both of either flare fitting or both o ring fittings. It makes getting hoses made easier.

Then you have to change the lower steering shaft u joint.

In the end, well worth the effort.

Good luck

If you can, take your frame mounting bracket with you. Second best would be the old steering gear.

Check these folks out, they have good application info. AGR Perfomance, Inc.

Good luck
