Power steering not working after changing steering gear

Power steering not working after changing steering gear
50 times back and forth while engine not running? I guess Ive been doing it wrong. I fill the tank a little higher than full, start the engine, turn the wheels back and forth a few times (up on jack stands) and in about 10 seconds, the pump is quite. The fluid does cavitate a bit but all the fine bubbles go away after it sits for a hour or so. Check fluid level and add if needed...After that, no issues and works great,

If its works you must be doing it right. From what I have read it shouldnt take that many turns, but all the instructions I have seen say it "may" take that many. 50 is just where I stopped and figured something was wrong!

Probably need to ask the obvious: Do you have the lines going to the correct ports on the steering gearbox? I don't recall how mine was with the OEM hoses, as I went with a custom setup.

If so, you've got either a bad box, or a bad pump.

Whoa nice setup!

I'm pretty sure hp/lp ports are different sizes (16mm and 18mm ??), but I was careful to put them back the way they were when I replaced the box.

I also realized instead of raising the front of the jeep, and that maybe affecting bleeding the box that you can disconnect the pitman arm from the box or the drag link to make it easy to turn the wheel back and forth.

I ended up doing a warranty claim with rockauto. So they will ship me a new box (free shipping luckily) and hopefully this one will just work. I'll keep yall updated.

Thanks. Way too much $$$$$$ into the entire project....

Keep us posted.

New box from rockauto should come in today, should have a chance to get it in tonight.

Hopefully this one works out better than the last one, will let yall know how it goes.

Ok, good news is my power steering is now working good.

Bad news is that it wasn't the steering gear, it ended up being the pump, so another $50 spent on more parts.

My best guess is that my old pump worked great with my old steering gear because they had both kind of worn out together, and the old gear didnt require the pressure that the rebuilt one did. So when I replaced the steering gear and the power steering wouldn't work I naturally thought it was because of the new box, since that was what had changed. When I got the second replacement gear installed, it still wouldn't work so I decided it had to be the pump. Replaced the pump with an a1 cardone (same brand as steering gear) reman from rockauto and now everything works great. Still working on getting every bit of air out of the pump which takes a while.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Good news. :chug:

The best way to 'bleed' a PS system is buy doing 15-20 full right to left to right 'lock to lock' cycles with the steering wheel.

Glad you finally figured it out. :chug: Don't you just love the way everything on our Jeeps is so obvious?

Haha....whenever I need to fix something no matter how minute I just start at one end of the Jeep and work my way to the other. Because somehow it all ties together
