OK i have a leak at the seal where steering coupling is connected to power steering box. Where do you find parts to rebuild the box and not have to buy a whole one? Thanks.

Don't know about the seal, but if you're thinking about rebuilding a steering box. I would rethink that, and the forget it. They are not a user friendly item to repair, and take special tools and knowledge to perform a proper rebuild. Messing up can mean your life. Their pretty inexpensive to just replace with a professionally rebuilt unit. But that is just my $.02

thanks guys but I really only need to replace the input shaft seal due to leakage, The box works fine. Sorry for the confusion.

Ahh...

The front seal requires a tear down and you usually need to buy a complete kit. The pitman arm seal can be replaced pretty easily.

If your up for a tear down, let me know the number on your box and I'll send you a link to a rebuild kit... :)

thanks CJ i may have to just find a replacement because I have too many projects going on now. But if I change my mind I'll let you know.

If you just wanna replace it/ upgrade it, there is a few places that make upgrade boxes that are really nice. I have my eye on a PSC variable assist box when I can scrape up (and keep) the change needed for it.

Man I sure do miss reading his columns ( Granville King) in Four Wheeler magazine. So you have to do a total tear down to replace the input shaft seal correct?.

I don't know...I simply just won't fool with one. But I sure do agree with missing Granville's colums! He went to hell in a hand basket when the Coyotes got Super Dawg.:(

maybe you guys/gals will remember, What was the other column about a grumpy old man and his wife traveling around in the Suburban?.

I replaced that seal in my last cj without removing it from the jeep. Not that hard if you are good at replacing seals. It did not require a teardown to replace the seal, and it never leaked on me again. Granted, I rebuild pumps for a living, so I deal with seals daily, and have picked up a few tricks here and there. Whichever way you decide to go, good luck with it.

Ok guys/gals I need a good write up on replacing the input shaft only seal. The more pics the better

I have never been able to replace the seal without messing it up... I always have either changed it out with a refurbed. I would suggest you PM baker9713 because he does it for a living, maybe he can write agood tech article on it and post it here -->> Jeep-CJ Tech. Articles

The toughest part for me was getting the old seal out without removing the shaft. If I remember right, it took a couple hours to get it out. For putting in the new one, put some grease on the lip and the shaft, and carefully tap it in with a deep well socket that matches the outer diameter of the seal.
As long as it's just the seal that is worn and not the shaft, you will be ok. If the shaft has a groove in it that can be felt with your fingernail or a razor blade, the shaft will need to be replaced. hope this helps.

Oh sure! I am 1 1/2 hours from winning a 2 month old power steering box on Epay...because my input seal is leaking...and reading this thread made me think it wasn't feasable to try and replace it by itself...and now Baker9713 makes it sound so easy to replace....:censored:

cursing and injuries are most of our middle names
And everybody knows that when you buy a CJ it comes with a prescription for high blood pressure medicine :p. Hey baker it's the input shaft seal that is leaking. just need to know how to get dust cover off to get to the seal. Thanks

It's been a few years, but iirc it screws off. Use a chisel, punch, or your least favorite flat screwdriver to get it started. Once that comes off you should be able to see the seal. You will destroy that seal to get it out, so make sure you have a new one to put in it's place. Take your time & be careful when putting in the new seal. Do you have the steering gear out of the jeep? That might make it easier; I did mine without removing it.
