power steering replacement parts!
looks like you should be able to get it from there. Not sure I'd pull the adjuster plug without knowing how far it has to go back in.
 
Ok I do not even think pulling locknut is necessary after hearing the drywall screw to pull the old one out trick. is there a problem if the rubber dust seal is missing? :confused: ( I'm pretty sure I already know the answer).:eek:
 
Well :dung: have the adjuster plug removed and the old seal out and when I go to replace the seal guess what? it's to small.....:censored:. it's the part from Azone #8709 and have heard some mention that that is the seal they use. Does anybody have the part number for the slightly bigger seal from any store I really want to finish this so I can move on to the next broken part.Thanks :chug:
Oh and it is supposed to be tight (seal) right? because it just falls in and can be moved around just slightly.

I ran into the same thing. I had replaced my steering box with one from a 77 CJ and the seal was a different size than the 79 box. I will try and look when I get home for the two part numbers. It was a piece of cake to replace the seal. I did try a rebuild on the 79 and that is why I replaced it with the 77 box. So the year of the steering box is critical for getting the right size seal. I think the guy said they only made the two sizes. I could be wrong.:D
 
hey grignag I believe you're right on the two sizes and I believe they gave me one for the 79 and up instead of 78 and down. Of course the PO may have put a newer P/S box in and that's why the seal was too small because it was for a 78 and down, Now my head hurts where did I put that Bud Light prescription? :confused:. oh well we'll find out tomorrow which is which.
 
OK NAPA to the rescue..we found the seal the old fashion way by using a digi mic we checked the size of the old seal and found a match (out of a box that had dozens of random seals). I have it in but still have the radiator and elect fans to put back in. My question is while I have access to the front should I replace the Timing chain?. Couldn't tell if the PO had changed it or not but I did the rotor check and there is practically no play between turning the motor by hand and rotor movement. I usually do replace things like that when i get a new project but $$$ are kinda short these days and don't want to replace if there is no need to.
 
thought this would be good to know for anyone else who may need to replace/rebuild theirs (P/S box) and not sure what they have. Oh and old this project has been this way from the get go and I love it :banana:

well at least now I know why the seal wouldn't work from a stock cj box, oh well`hindsight i guess.


Just to confuse things a little more, BOTH of my CJs ( '74 CJ5 and '83 CJ7 ) have the Saginaw '76' boxes as a stock part...so its not just camaros and Waggys! :chug:
 
:eek: Is there a code on the box that will tell which is which?. I tried both early/late model CJ's and neither was right had Napa check old seal with a mic and found one in a box with I guess spare seals.

Both of my boxes have this code cast into them: 5691676
Its on the upper part of the box, near the little adjustment thing on top.

The pic shows my stock '74 box with the cast-in '76' and <S>.
