Power Steering Too Good

Power Steering Too Good
Power isn't really needed on the road (but It makes It nice) But off road, my personal opinion is that It's a necessary item. Like Old Dog, my CJ has both power steering, and impeccable manners at any speed, but my front end is tight as a drum and properly set up. If your's is otherwise, something is wrong. None of us here wish to badger you with opinions, we just don't want to see anyone injured.

mine has a lot of "play" in it as well. Yeah it could be set up better....
but I look at it is part of the fun in driving a CJ.
(I have a 4 inch rancho lift and 33inch BFG's)

A cj should NOT have any more play than any other vehical you own.
Oh yea...It won't be so "fun" when you wreck and hurt or kill yourself or someone else.:(
sorry for the rant, but really fix it before you hurt someone.

I never stated how much play I had. The play is a little more like how I
drove 1960's era cars/trucks without power steering. Believe me - If I thought it was
endangering other drivers - yes I agree- I would get it fixed.:) Meanwhile I will
enjoy driving "as-is". A little sloppy steering - not a big deal with me.

Sorry I still say fix the problem you have, a stablizer is not ment to fix steering problems. I have power steering with no stablizer and can drive 70mph with no problems.

ok Old Dog why are you so sure that I have a problem....
I just think that Power Steering on such a Short Wheelbase will be a bit sensitive.

I don't recall telling you YOU had a problem, you didn't start this thread.
All I'm saying is a stablizer is not a fix for loose steering.

Well it is good to see I have created a spirited discussion!!

I am going to go out and check to ensure that everything looks good and tight first. Then I plan on getting a 4 wheel alignment as I doubt if it has been done in years. (starting with the simple stuff)

I will report back and let you know what I find.

Ok I went out and took a good look, my steering stabilizer is shot even the bushings are bad on it. The tie rods all are tight and have no issues. I am going to change out the steering stabilizer and get it aligned this weekend.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I will let you know how it turns out.:notworthy:

Little narow jeeps are a bit diferent than most other cars and trucks. Because of their short narrow stance, any little looseness in the system really transmits itself to "feel" To really get a proper check, you should actually jack the front end off the ground a little, and have someone rock the steering wheel while you get a good look at what's going on. I have found that more often than not, a bad steering box is to blame for much of the slop. Over the years, people have simply come to expect a CJ to be sloppy, and think It's normal, but It's not true. Mine is as tight and straight as my new Grand Cherokee is, and has the same manners on and off road. Anything less, and there is an issue that needs to be found.

Is that the original steering box that factory installed?
