I have a question. I have a jeep CJ7 (83) with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine and it is a standard engine. I bought a new engine for it, CJ7 (82) AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with after market header and holley carburetor with no Catalytic converter, no electric wires, and no emission wires. I can install that engine with a carburetor and header. I can also get more horse power in it but I am afraid I may have some problems during inspection in Virginia. Would it pass inspection so I can know before I install an engine that I might not be able to use if it doesn't pass:confused:?

In CT you cannot have an engine that is older than the vehicle but they turn a blind eye as long as you pass emissions. also after 25 years the vehicle doesnt need emissions anymore. Does your state have an age limit? If it does then maybe you can take a chance. I remember though back around 1993 when I lived in Utah allot of people from Colorado had to sell their Jeeps because they passed a law about engine swaps and would allow them to reregister without pulling the motors.

I know what your going thru, I had to register as classic (1983 CJ7 ) with my insurance company. Bottom line no emmision problems. In AZ it has to be 30 years old B4 it no longer requires emmisions. Anyway here's what I did: Added Offey intake manifold to bolt on Holley truck avenger ( pivoting floats very nice!) added Pacesetter headers. The difference is Astounding! Power went up exponentially and it sounds like a big V8.

All you have to worry about in VA is that it is in running order. Where are you at in the Beach? I can recommend a couple shops from when I used to live there that are really good guys. Unless things have changed in the past few years, the only thing I would do is put a catalytic converter on. The lights, and mechanical things are what is stressed more than the emissions. If you don't tell them you replaced the motor, they will never know.
