Project Tub Swap

Project Tub Swap
Every night I drill one more bolt out and tap another... it is slow going during he week, but I hope this weekend to transform the tub in to a CJ! Owner is coming over to give a hand. I am hoping at least for the cowl, the gas filler and some other misc things done. I still have the rear seat mounts to drill and tap... DAMN!

One of the things I detest the most is drilling and fixing broken bolts! I'm a firm believer in SS bolts where ever I can on a CJ!

All the bolts are finally OUT.
We got a good jump on the project yesterday.
Cut up the old tub, moved some parts over to the new one, got all the bolts out, fit and made some new captive nuts for the seat mount, got the filler cut in, cleaned up the garage a bit, sold the tires/rims from the old axles... all in all, a great start and a good day in the garage!

That looks great and coming along well! Glad to hear all those PITA bolts are off, they sure can be frustrating!

I got a few more things done yesterday.
I was able to get the other tub cut up and in the back of the truck, I got the rear hinges for the tailgate, both lower and upper separated from the old tub and ready to go on and then I separated the pillar for the driver side floor.

I cut out the rust/rot in a rough cut and I will go back and clean that all up and get new metal ready to be welded in.
All in all it is going smoothly, I can't complain too much.

It is just a matter of time.
I hope this weekend I get a good solid 6-8 hours to weld and grind on it.
I hope to have the tub mostly done by the end of Memorial Day so I can get ready to rip apart his CJ and swap it.

Plans changed a bit... I wanted to be done with the tub by today, but instead, we ripped apart the CJ quite a bit yesterday.

So, basically, the tub has undergone some rear end changes... it now sports a functional tailgate, the YJ filler is welded up, as well as all the YJ tailgate holes and the fender flare holes for the YJ. It was all ground smooth and is ready for the next stage.

The Jeep itself is gone from this

to this

Basically we removed all the interior stuff and then moved onto the body removal and rally getting it down to where we can get the rest of the tub off and get trial fitting the new tub in place so we can make sure it all fits.

We need one more day of thrashing on the CJ and the front will be removed completely down to a roller. With it a roller we can then concentrate on fitting the YJ body and really getting all the body mounts replaced and line up correctly. The rear cross member needs to be replaced, but that is just par for the course. The frame is in great shape for its age and location (New England) so no surprised there.

Everything wend smoothly, check out the entire writeup here... towards the bottom of the page is the new stuff.

Take care.

Making more progress, the old tub is off, the new tub has been tried out and new mounts are in place. Now some more repair work and fitting stuff up and we should be in good shape. I am looking forward to seeing how this thing goes.

Also to note, a NV3550 is on its way with a full conversion package and a hydraulic clutch. It should be a very nice addition to this rig with the 35's and 4.56 gears.

It's looking very nice. I am thinking about a hyd clutch on rebuild also. I have the salve and master cyl. - just deciding if that is what I want to do...

I have a hydraulic clutch on the silver one... never will I got back to the manual setup... even when I put in the new heater core on the Orange one, I will do the swap for it... It is just a matter of time before that core lets go in the Orange one.

Very nice. Whens the estimate on having it up and running? You tore that one down pretty quick. I always prefer disassembly to assembly myself. :)

This thing has to be done by mid-August... baby delivery in the beginning of Sept, so I won't have too much time after that.

I am going to do the fender flare fitting as well as the side rails today... then this weekend finish up the body welding and move onto taking out the drivetrain and cleaning up the frame. All in all, if I keep up with this pace, I should be done before August, but YOU ALL know how this goes... sometimes you have the time, sometimes you have the money, but never at the same time.

Congrats on #1. And as far as #2 truer words have not been spoken.

Congrats! Didn't know we were all going to have a new Jeeper! Great! :)

Little baby girl on 09.07.09... she will be in a Jeep in no time... heck, she is going to grow up working on them, so might as well get her used to them early on!

That is fantastic! I hereby request to be known as Uncle CJ! BTW - That is how my Niece refers to me now~ ! :)

Just like the 10,000 posts, I suggest a date/time/weight contest.
Winner(s) can win certifiablejeep t-shirts/tanks parts, or a gift certificate, all stuff I have.

I think 3 winners.

One for the date, one for the time, and one for the weight.

Only one hint, I weighed 9.2 at birth :eek:
