Hi there - somewhere in its life my CJ7 had is heater hoses removed. I'm about to try and resurrect it but need to know which hose connects to where. You can see in the picture that hose is currently bypassing the heater. (At least i'm assuming that is the case). So Question is what port connects to what. I'm thinking ports 1 and 2 get connected and ports 3 and 4 - but want someone to confirm

Thanks
Ron

Be aware, the hose connection on the water pump is not the same size as the heater core connection. I think it is poor engineering. The stock hose is larger on one end than it is on the other. You can get around this problem by getting an inline reducer. Bigger hose goes in, smaller hose goes out. It seems a little rub gilberg, but will save a bunch of hassle in the long run.

Glad to find this information about the 5/8 x 3/4 hose size on the forum in multiple threads. I discovered my heater hose from the water pump was leaking and have ordered the ACDelco (GM) molded hose (thanks for the info Jon) from Amazon along with a Gates 5/8 straight heater hose. Mine sprung a pinhole leak right where it had been rubbing for some time on the top of the alternator. I think the molded hose with the 90 degree bend will avoid that in the future.

Can anyone tell me... Do I need to drain the cooling system to install the heater hoses? I was thinking I could probably just remove and replace one hose at a time with minimal fluid loss. Any suggestions on heater hose replacement would be appreciated. Thanks

No. You loose very little

With that thing not being hooked up for so long, I'd wonder:

1. Is there was a reason it was bypassed? Maybe a leak.

2. Could it be full of :dung: at this point and do I want that surging through my motor?

I think I'd remove the heater core and have it checked out before connecting it to the motor.

Be advised... I'm just a novice at this.

This is a real good point.

I think the last reply on this thread was intended for a different post.

Thanks for he feedback Belizean! Glad to hear I don't have to drain the system to replace the heater hoses.

This is what happens when you hi-jack a old post.

Actually I think the poster could be correct. That is probably why it is disconnected. The last owner could of decided the heater core was shot and just didn't want to fix. Its a medium job to replace. Replace mine for the first time probably 4-5 years ago. Good luck

Just wanted to update this thread with an additional AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l heater hose part number. I was unsuccessful at getting an ACDelco molded hose through Amazon due to delay from the supplier (ACDelco) so I went to my local NAPA parts store and found a NAPA part # 10078 which is 5/8" on one end and 3/4" on the other end. It's also molded with a 90 degree bend which allows it to fit well in the space available without rubbing on the alternator as my old one did. The short end is the 3/4" ID. See attached photos.

Installation would have been easier with the alternator and its mounting bracket removed, but I didn't want to remove it so I fought through getting the 3/4' end of the hose on in the Limited space.

Thanks for posting the update. I know Gates makes a similar hose, but it's straight. Got mine from Rock Auto. And yes, it's a dumb design.
