Due to some pretty extreme vision problem I have a VERY hard time working underneath a vehicle, not to mention how hard it is on my old bones to get up and down off the ground.

So a friend recommended pulling the engine in my 77 CJ7 to change the clutch (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and t-18a).

What are the pros and cons of doing it this way?

It would seem to be a lot more work and lining things up would be pretty difficult from up top. Still would have to adjust clutch from underneath also.
Do you have a local garage where you can rent a bay with a lift. Two people removing and re-installing wouldn't take but half a day with a lift.

There is definitely more things you have to remove and install pulling the engine, and you will still be under the Jeep getting the exhaust, motor mounts, and starter loose....... beware pulling the engine gets a really big snow ball rolling lol

Not to mention, unless you are working over a pit, you would in all probability have to remove the radiator and grill, any wiring for the headlights and turn signals. If you try to put the engine and Transmission in or out as a unit, the angle required to clear the fire wall is extreme. Plus, you will probably hit the ground with the Transfer Case before you are able to level things out. Hence the pit. IMHO, and I have tried to do exactly what you are trying to do for the same reasons, Taking most of the front end apart to do a clutch change is a lot more work.

Leave the engine in place-Pull the tranny/t'case.;)
I have the same vision issues you have along with dizzy spells when get'n up from lay'n down under any vehicle. I turned 66 in March.
Take you time and stay well hydrated. :notworthy:
HINT: I put my CJ rear wheels on 12" blocks to get plenty of room.
You will want/NEED a tranny jack adapter for you floor jack. :notworthy:

Go with a LUK clutch kit from NAPA. Might also be a time to have your flywheel surfaced and new starter gear installed.

Best of luck :chug:

for the love of god leave the motor in it is far less work to change the clutch with the motor in then it is to take the motor out and do it.

Get yourself a nice creeper with lots of padding and good rollers for getting under that CJ also.
