I just picked up a 95 jeep for a really good deal.

The ignition is busted and previous owner started the car by manual pushing a "rod" on the steering column.

I ordered the pivot push start and it seemed simple enough until I looked under the steering column of the jeep. Now I'm totally lost as yo which wires go where.

Has anyone installed one or point me in the right direction?

Thanks alot

Hey Mike... Just to confirm.. you have a square head light YJ? This site is mostly for CJ era Jeeps 76-86 so I wouldnt expect alot of answer to your exact question. Fortunately for you I have a Yj and may be able to assist.

When looking into changing any Jeep with a modern column into a push start there are 3 main things to work out.

#1 obviously the push button. I can show you how to work that out in about 3 minutes.

#2 Ignition power for the rest of the jeep. You can either wire every thing to a relay (or switch) as a master shut off or use your key to turn the power on. Since your problem is the ignition is broken you are probably not going to be able to go that route.

#3 The modern steering wheels in the jeeps use a locking wheel so you will still need to turn the key to move the mechanism that unlocks the wheel.

From the very brief and not to descriptive descrition of the column Im gonna go out on a limb and say the had the gears strip off the cam that A) unlocks the wheel and B) normally pulls the rod that you must pull by hand to operate the ingnition/start switch. Or it could be that the rod fell out of place and there is nothing broken.. it just needs to be put back where it belongs.

If thats the case I would strongly recommend against trying to swap over to a push start and replace the broken part. So I now pose a few more questions for ya.

Does it have a working key?
Is it a tilt column?
Does every thing else on the column work?
If its a tilt column is it a wobly tilt column?

If you would like some help trouble shooting it and can drive it about 45 minutes I would be more then happy to look at it for you. I can probably fix it for you also. Or I can sell you the good YJ steering column I have in my garage orrrr I can trade you my good one for yours and some cash.

No matter what you decide to do please dont try change it over to push button start. Unles you know your way around YJ wiring pretty well it will no have a good outcome.

You can also try to fix it your self.. they are not that hard and only require 1 special tool for the column and 1 special tool to tighten the wobble nut if yours is loose.

You can PM me back here or call text me at 407-361-4132

yeah, you have a lot more wires to deal with other than the start circuit..repairing it the right way would be best
