Putting CJ7 seats in a CJ5?

I just bought a 63 CJ5 . This is my first jeep and the first time I am attempting to work on a vehicle of any sort (I've always kind of been a girly-girl but have recently discovered my inner tomboy!).

One of the many issues with my jeep is that the seats in it are horrible! They reek of dead mice and the original upholstery and the recover upholstery are shot! I found a set of very similar looking low-back front seats to put in her. They are out of a 70s CJ7 . Does anyone know what I'm going to need to do to get them to fit?

did you get the seat frames?

you may need a drill to drill new holes to mount them

1 caution is to put them in and sit down, there is a different amount of room between a CJ7 and a CJ5 and the seats may fit funny, so pull the seat mount all the way forward, so the seat is all the way back and mark the places to drill the new holes,
I would kinda play around a bit with this as you are going to want to sit in it and arrange the seat to where it fits best and feels best,
then bolt it in, now you can move the seat forward to where you want to sit.

I found this article when I was searching online for the answer to this conundrum. But the article is for 76 and newer CJ5s and mine is a 63. But thanks for looking for me! I appreciate it.

Hang on to the old seats, you may very well decide that the best situation is to have the old frames re padded and covered.

I'm definitely keeping the old seats!! I figured at some point, in the future after the jeep is running and I have had a chance to save some money again I would either try myself to redo them or take them someplace to have them done. But for right now, I'm extremely short on money. I had no idea this was going to cost so much to work on! I just need seats that will work for the moment.

ON a 63 we have some problems with CJ7 seats
they are to deep and you will be sitting up on the steering wheel
plus you will need the old seat bows so you can use the tool box and clear the gas tank

They do not make seats for a 71 and older jeep anymore, your best bet is to get the old ones rebuilt

It is a 63. 47 years old. lot needs a lot of TLC
A lot of parts need to be sourced from a dismantler, hand fabbed, or up graded to new. It is not by any means a cheap vehicle to keep up. And if you are going to use it as a DD we need to talk about stuff. It is an antique and we need to upgrade the brakes and stuff.

Well I am only 5'4" so maybe I won't have a problem with the seat being higher? Ugh. I'm really having trouble finding seats for a CJ5 or for a jeep older than the 70s. (except the military seats, which I have found plenty of expensive replacements for.)

The brakes look good. We're going to inspect them more thoroughly once we get the engine running. If I need a new engine it may take a few months. My boyfriend visually inspected the steering system (because I didn't know what to look for). Everything seems fine, but again we were going to be thorough once we knew the engine worked. (And when we get to that point I will be asking A LOT of questions on here!) We took out the gas tank and are cleaning it. We changed all the filters, drained the oil, and put on a new carburetor and fuel pump. He checked the wiring for major problems. For right now the main concern is to get her running. As soon as we do we are going to drain all the fluids and flush and replace and do a thorough inspection of every system BEFORE we even drive her off the farm property. I'm a stickler for safety. I don't want to be responsible for someone else's death or die myself.

The frame is solid but I need new leaf springs. The tires and rims are excellent. The body is very rough, but I don't care. I just love this jeep and I think it's wonderful just the way it looks now. There are already several patches and we'll patch if we need to.

I'm lucky enough to have a boyfriend who is a good mechanic and a "jeep guy" friend a couple hours away if I really need help. (And I've found tons of help and information on these forums!) I'm determined to learn as much as I can and do as much work as I can myself. I am excited about digging through junkyards and hitting the local auctions for parts. I am hoping with all that I can get and keep my old '63 running. It has been costing more than I thought but it's mostly because of all the little things I didn't factor in to the finances. (And if nothing else, I'm done with school in 2 semesters so I'll hopefully have a job making a decent wage soon! ) I probably shouldn't have gotten an old jeep that's not even running as my vehicle when I'm so poor, but I love this jeep!! It's just perfect for me. I know it'll be a lot of work (and it already has) but if I can do a lot of the work myself then can't it still be somewhat affordable? Well, after I get a working engine anyway. LMAO. Guess I just answered my own question.

Here is one of the photos from the on-line ad where I found the jeep to buy. I didn't take any pictures of it myself before we pulled the seats out. I will take pictures of the seats tomorrow and post them, but maybe this will still help to see if the CJ7 seats will fit.


Here is a pic of the CJ7 seats (or one of them anyway) that I was going to pick up from the seller this week. This is the only picture he sent me. I don't know if you can tell if it will fit in my jeep or not. Can anyone tell?
