Ok here it is hope you have some time to read..
I decided to hook up my edrive switch and see what is going on with 4x4 well nothing happened the only time the shaft moves is when i lock in the hubs.
I jacked it up to make sure I wasnt imagining things, both axles off the ground tried everything i could imagine but no luck
PO said the VAC motor on the back of the TC was bad?? Is there any place to get these I have looked a lil with no luck
Any Ideas
I have a 79
CJ7 , originally with a
AMC 304 and
QuadraTrac TC.
The front axle had only "slugs" on the ends, that kept the drive axle shafts engaged all the time. These arent locking hubs, just ends that bolt on to the rotor hub that keep the axle shafts engaged all the time. I wonder why you have hubs on yours.... hmmmmmm
You mentioned locking in the hubs... Did the PO install locking hubs to DISENGAGE full time 4wd? or was it part of the "doug nash" "milemarker" part time conversion kit? I installed the milemarker kit about 15 years ago with no trouble since. I'd be interested to know what has been done to it, to know if it is actually in its stock condition, ro been modified.
Some people install locking hubs to be able to take it out of 4wd (without actually installing the 2x4 conversion kit in the TC. That is the absolute cheapest way to eliminate the full time 4wd, but wear and tear is still happening at the front end by all the moving parts still turning. Even when the hubs are unlocked, the front drive shaft should still be turning..... because there is still torque being delivered by the full time 4wd TC. Again, you need to know what (if anything) has been altered in the TC. (conversion kit, etc)
"the VAC motor on the back of the TC"???? As I mentioned above, I put a part time conversion kit in mine to allow 2wd / 4wd....I've been in my TC several times and dont have any idea what "motor" the PO would be referring to. There is a diaphram that is activated by vacuum directed by the ED switch in the glove box. The vacuum moves a shift fork that engages a splined shaft allowing torque to be transmitted to the front drive shaft as well as the rear. This happens when there is a part time conversion kit installed. If no conversion kit has been installed, there is STILL a vacuum activated fork inside the TC that shifts the TC into another "mode" that delivers more torque to the front shaft.
First, I would make sure the vacuum lines going to the TC are actually in place. Make sure there are no leaks. Make sure they are hooked up correctly (although hooking them up backwards would not take it out of 4wd).
If lines are there, hooked up to vacuum source, and not leaking, I would say the diapham is leaking. It is easily changed without having to remove the TC. I've seen that part on Ebay, and I am almost 100% sure that Morris 4x4 has them available to buy.
Its hard to diagnose without knowing what you have to start with.
good luck. Hope this helped a bit
please let us know your progress.
