Ok here it is hope you have some time to read..:D

I decided to hook up my edrive switch and see what is going on with 4x4 well nothing happened the only time the shaft moves is when i lock in the hubs.

I jacked it up to make sure I wasnt imagining things, both axles off the ground tried everything i could imagine but no luck:censored::censored::censored:

PO said the VAC motor on the back of the TC was bad?? Is there any place to get these I have looked a lil with no luck

Any Ideas

I have a 79 CJ7 , originally with a AMC 304 and QuadraTrac TC.
The front axle had only "slugs" on the ends, that kept the drive axle shafts engaged all the time. These arent locking hubs, just ends that bolt on to the rotor hub that keep the axle shafts engaged all the time. I wonder why you have hubs on yours.... hmmmmmm

You mentioned locking in the hubs... Did the PO install locking hubs to DISENGAGE full time 4wd? or was it part of the "doug nash" "milemarker" part time conversion kit? I installed the milemarker kit about 15 years ago with no trouble since. I'd be interested to know what has been done to it, to know if it is actually in its stock condition, ro been modified.

Some people install locking hubs to be able to take it out of 4wd (without actually installing the 2x4 conversion kit in the TC. That is the absolute cheapest way to eliminate the full time 4wd, but wear and tear is still happening at the front end by all the moving parts still turning. Even when the hubs are unlocked, the front drive shaft should still be turning..... because there is still torque being delivered by the full time 4wd TC. Again, you need to know what (if anything) has been altered in the TC. (conversion kit, etc)

"the VAC motor on the back of the TC"???? As I mentioned above, I put a part time conversion kit in mine to allow 2wd / 4wd....I've been in my TC several times and dont have any idea what "motor" the PO would be referring to. There is a diaphram that is activated by vacuum directed by the ED switch in the glove box. The vacuum moves a shift fork that engages a splined shaft allowing torque to be transmitted to the front drive shaft as well as the rear. This happens when there is a part time conversion kit installed. If no conversion kit has been installed, there is STILL a vacuum activated fork inside the TC that shifts the TC into another "mode" that delivers more torque to the front shaft.

First, I would make sure the vacuum lines going to the TC are actually in place. Make sure there are no leaks. Make sure they are hooked up correctly (although hooking them up backwards would not take it out of 4wd).

If lines are there, hooked up to vacuum source, and not leaking, I would say the diapham is leaking. It is easily changed without having to remove the TC. I've seen that part on Ebay, and I am almost 100% sure that Morris 4x4 has them available to buy.

Its hard to diagnose without knowing what you have to start with.

good luck. Hope this helped a bit

please let us know your progress.

I was wrong.
Looked on Morris 4x4 site and didnt see a listing for it...

However, here is one I found on ebay:

Jeep Quadratrac Quadra Trac Vacuum Diaphragm BW 1339 | eBay

I'm not saying this is your problem. However it could be. You need to check all the vacuum connections. There is a cover you can take off the TC to see the fork moving inside when there is vacuum applied to this vacuum diaphram. Obviously you wouldnt want to have the jeep running, so just put a temporary line on the diaphram and suck on the end. It should be enough suction to make the fork move.

There could be other things wrong with your TC, but this is where I'd start.

good luck

You should never have locking hubs on a QuadraTrac unless the TCase has the MileMarker part time kit installed (I think that's the only company that makes them). The QuadraTrac has a differential. Some people install locking hubs thinking they are going to save on wear and tear. Actually it's the opposite, They wreck the clutch pack in the QuadraTrac . The jeep won't go unless the clutch slips and tries to pull the rear drive shaft.
The QuadraTrac is a full time Transfer Case and it MUST drive both axles all the time unless it has been converted with a part time kit.

Yes I know that it 4x4 and im not sure if its got the MM PT kit in it im going to remove the TC and do a good inspection of it. I can turn the front shaft by hand so something is wrong or it has the MM kit installed already. I will find out in a few days when I remove it will keep yall updated thanks for the info

Unless you need to remove it for some other reason, I would check the vacuum lines first to see what is going on. It could be as simple as the fork not moving to engage the front output shaft.

You also need to check the chain for excessive wear. There is a plug on the Tcase that allows you to insert a screwdriver or pencil, or whatever you want, and check the chain for excessive deflection. If there is too much deflection, the TC will make banging noises under load. This is the chain slipping. It sounds a little like a broken cv joint on a honda, except not quite as "friendly".

I have checked the vac lines and nothing so im going to pull it and see whats wrong and try to get it working properly. If I dont pull it I have to cut the tub and im not doing that.

Hey oilfieldhand..

there is a guy selling a Milemarker kit w/16% Overdrive option for $200 at this link:

Mile Marker Quadratrac Part-Time Kit - JeepForum.com

Looks like a very good deal.

I didnt know the outcome of your TC issues.

The QuadraTrac isnt a bad case. It isnt as strong as some, but all in all isnt bad. Plus going to another case might get expensive as you'll need a different adapter at the Transmission and a different rear end as well..

Just thought you might be interested...
