1977 cj7 232 inline 6,Dana 20 Tc,T-150 Trans, stock diffs.
Well im curious because all the title says on my CJ5 is 77 jeep and i need to know how to tell the difference my cj doesnt have a tailgate i dont know if that was how the CJ5 or cj7s were is there any easy way to tell? Thanks!
 
The CJ7 is 10" longer than the CJ5 . If you look at the door opening on the 5 it's arched upward (kind of matches the tire), on the 7 it comes back further and curves upward.
 
Mine is a 79 CJ5 and came with no tail gate.

Not trying to high jack the thread, but is it common to have a CJ without a tailgate? I can't tell if mine is stock, since it doesn't have the gate.
 
Hmm...

Evey five I ever saw had a tail gate (at least from the factory)... :)
 
^^ true Dat'...Every 5 I've seen had a factory tailgate. Is the OP's tub fiberglass, maybe?

The body is steel. I can tell by the massive amounts of rust :)! Maybe the OO (original owner) :) just modified the tailgate. I have no idea!

I don't know if my 74 tub is original or not but it has on tailgate.:confused:
 
Probably is. Earlier Cj-5s had a tailgate. Pre 76 I believe. My '78 doesnt.
 
Guys.. And Galls - AMC / Willies / Kaiser never sold a CJ without a tailgate! :)

Are you saying my tub is aftermarket? Has Jeep stamped way before Jeep ever let it be stamped by aftermarket. Has Amc logos also. Was the tailgate delete an option? Thats a viable alternative
 
Nope Cj. Im calling you out on this one. Its above the years your used to dealing with. Why do the sell the diamond plate wrap around for Cj-5s then? It would cover your tailgate. I'll search for a pic quick to show you what I mean.

I owned a 72 CJ5 just out of the factory - still do... I have never seen a tailgate listed as an option... They were, and always have been part of the base package... :)
