I have purchased my first CJ5 (1980 with a 6 cylinder and first generation Holly fuel injection). I want to return the jeep back to a 2B carburetor. The current system is ok - the jeep now runs and drives good, but is not reliable; i.e. the fuel injection system is not computerized (manually tuned), the electric fuel pump and control module are no longer available, as well as some of the other smaller component parts. Gas mileage is about 8 MPG. Bottom line... concern is that if I break down and really need assistance, I will wish I had modified this jeep. That said:
What 2 barrel carb and tricks would one recommend to return this rig to stock plus (reliability)? Specific brand and source?
Any special fuel pump issues (as the original one was removed and block plated?

Well if u don't want a new fuel injection set up go with the tried and true MC 2100 off a 72 bronco with the 302 it should have the 108 ventricle.

I would maybe try to work with the system you have then going back to a Carb which is going to have its own set of problems. I've lived with both a 2BBL Carb, and a TBI, and I can say without a doubt the TBI was more reliable. I'm sure you can easily get aftermarket parts for your kit like inline fuel pumps and filters. Holley is not exactly a mom and pop shop.

I would recommend calling Holley to get some help in troubleshooting these problems, such as the low gas mileage. When I had problems with my TBI, I called the manufacturer Howell, and they were extremely helpful in finding a solution.

Quick question. Are you sure it doesn't have a computer? I've never heard of an injection system without some kind of onboard computer system monitoring everything. You mention that it has a control module. That usually houses the computer.

Good Luck!!

My '79 CJ5 with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l had the stock BBD 2 barrel carb when I got it, which was recently. That ran just fine to me. I swapped it out for a Weber 32/36 and I really enjoy it, so I can say those two carbs work just fine.

From everything I've read on here and other forums, the Motorcraft 2100 seems to be the best fit to a Jeep 6 cylinder. It seems to outperform the other carbs just on the basis of it's simplicity. I used to rebuild carbs and do a lot of modifying back in the day so I am physically familiar with the 2100 I just have not used one on any of my own vehicles, but I would recommend it for sure.

Those first gen Holley systems were difficult at best.

No chance you want to go to a newer unit?

MC2100 is best way to go for sure
