Once the Jeep is jacked up, would it mess with the steering?

I was looking at a Wrangler at this dealership where my brother in law works at, and he said that you cant take it over 40 without the steering messing up. I think he said it bounces or shakes.

Wouldnt that be because its been jacked up for muddin'?

I might be able to get a decent deal on this. If I can convince Stan that its an easy fix. BUT I have to be able to drive it down the highway.

Thank you for any info!

A poorly done lift can definately curse you with bump steer and other gremlins. Front ends arent too terribly hard to get right, and if you can get that good a deal on it, It's what you want, and you don't mind doing a bit of work, what the hell. Just be sure the rest of the Jeep is sound.

How much is all jacked up? 2"? 3"? 4"? Did someone put the springs over the axles?

It could be because of an improper lift or it could be a very worn out link in the steering system.
The PO could have easily not adjusted the caster correctly if they added allot of lift to the Jeep.
It easily could be an easy fix or it easily could be a difficult one. It all depends on what was done to the Jeep and what your level of ability is in correcting it.

Can you take a picture or two? What year? How much? What options / engine / running gear? It would be great if you got that Jeep you always wanted but we don't want it to be a money pit... :)

How many inches.... Dont know. My breasts sit on the bottom of the door.

Its a 1990. V-6, automatic. My brother in law can get it for $3500. The dealership wants $8000 for it. My brother in law said he would hook me up.

I will try to get pics.

a v6?

I think you misunderstood, unless I'm mistaken there was no v6 available so some one had to swap one in. I'll have to let someone more knowledale then me on later model Jeeps chime in on this though...

Posted from my CrackBerry.

Stan said that we need smaller tires. The tires stand up past my waist. I would definitely have to have steps of some nature to get into this thing...

Wranglers only came with 4 cyl and the inline six , earlier years are a carburated AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l like a cj and later ones fuel injected 4.0 litre. A 90 falls into the 4.0 fuel injected six. Good motor. By you saying "yah I know but its easily remedied" if you mean swapping an 8 cyl in no it is not easily remedied. The rest of your drivetrain would need to be swapped also. The auto , Ax-5 and even the Ax-15 manual are no match for V-8 power. Neither is the Dana 35 rear end. Youd also need the wiring harness from the donor v-8 if you go with fuel injection and a whole new exhaust , motor mounts ,radiator etc etc. Then you also have the ugliest front clip ever put on a Jeep. If you want a 8 cyl youd be best off finding a Cj with one already in and if you just cant locate one get one with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and swap one in. Much easier swap.

And that doesnt even help you straighten out the front end. From what youve stated ( tires up to your waist , cant go over 40 ) it sounds like whoever did the lift was a novice and traded his problem in at a car lot. Could be an easy fix in theory but this sounds alot like something youd have to throw a bunch of cash at to be happy with.

IMO bumpsteer generally is in relation to the angle between the draglink & the tierod. As far as using breast to determine tub height from the ground leave so many variables I can't go there. My tub is 38" over terra firma which puts the bottom of the door at 45", but that's still a foot short of breast level.:D

:( You just made me want to cry!
No reason to do that... What you have read is the worst it could be... It may be that someone just did a bad install of a lift kit and it just needs a drop pitman arm and maybe some angle shims under the spring perches. We don't know.

Once you provide some good close up pictures of the drivetrain and the lift we can make allot better recommendation.

What we are tryig to avoid is you getting a Jeep that is just going to suck your wallet dry... :)

I am 5'1". If its breast high... I dont carry a tape measure, so I always pick a body part and go with it...

I cried. And I know that you guys are trying to help... I am going to end up with something I definitely dont want because its just easier to buy something ready to drive.

Thanks guys.

My advice?? DONT GET IT. if you have to ask... and you want to drive it, its beyond your abilities.
IF you have a shop, the necessary knowledge (or someone who will donate time) and a never-ending wallet, then get it...

Don't buy it on looks, or cause its a good deal, unless you want to see EVERY part of it individually, in pieces. This is very dangerous time for the beginner JEEPer, and it is very easy to get discouraged and never look at a JEEP again...
Be brave and find WHAT YOU WANT, that you can work with, not what looks like a good deal at the time.

Dont go soully on what I said. Grab some pics of the front end and post em like Cj said. There are some guys here with good trained eyes who can tell you whats right and whats wrong. If your looking for a V-8 however back away right away. Do a couple craigslist searches and see what V-8 Cjs are going for in your area. If you frequent other websites post up a wanted ad for what you really want. Heck tell us and Id be willing to bet wed be able to find you one pretty quick. Maybe it was the way you described it but it smells like a money pit to me. Be patient you'll find the right one. :)

I donno Suz, I'm hearin some weird stuff here that makes me uneasy. Try to get some piks of the Jeep overall, and especially some from under the front end. A mild F up is usually nothing, but a conplete FUBAR is a whole other story.
