Guess the old 81CJ gas gauge is not that accurate lol. It was reading about 1/4 tank. At least I was close to home. Strange though, I dumped in 2 gallons from a can, got it started after a few tries with starting fluid, and drove to the gas station. I could not for the life of me get more than 8 gallons to go in. Surely the tank is bigger than 10 gallons but gauge reads full and it fires right up again. Any thoughts?

Your gage isn’t accurate as you can see. Mine has been inaccurate for quite a long time. I just write the mileage down on a yellow sticky pad and have it taped to the dash. One of those things I will probably get to one of these days, probably.

Tank should be about 14-15 gallons, at least.
I think an option was also a 20-ish gallon tank.

Gauges are no bueno for accuracy. You can probably hold a few more gallons though.

Unless the tank is not oem.
Can you look and take a pic from the side of the tank?

Your Pick Tube may be bent, or from corrosion, has developed a Pin Hole leak. Once the Gasoline has dropped below the Pin Hole, it will suck air and no longer "Lift" the liquid (Gasoline)

I use a grease pencil and fill up every 100 miles or so. My 81 has rhe same issue. Lol
