Rear bumper attaching question

Im in need of help with attaching a new rear bumper,i have the stock one on my CJ5 ,i am considering fabricaating one. Do I leave the factory one on? And attach to that. It seems that the original is welded on,I am wanting to place a swing out tire carrier on this bumper as well,since i have a fiberglass tub. This is my first jeep,and I am just wanting to build it correctly.Thanks in advance for any help. Rippy

Bumpers are easy if you weld.

3/8" x 3" flat bar and your choice - round tube, 2x4 tube. Your choice. The flats bolt to the outside of the frame. Weld the tube on. The flats can go all the way through and mount D rings if you like.

Don't mount it to the face of the rear cross member and pull on it. I've done that and it wasn't purdy.

That isn't a factory bumper it's the rear cross member and as 73CJ said you want to mount your bumper to the frame rails not the cross member.

Yes you do not want to remove it build you bumper off the frame rails.

Attaching to frame is easy, just bolt angle iron on either side of the frame behind the crossmember. Factory Jeep brackets used to be available for Jeeps with tow packages, but you can make some easily with some angle iron and holes drilled.

I found a tutorial on the bracket and understand now,I must have been having a brain fade day,thanks for all your help,one last question,would 1 bracket be fine for the bumper or would one on each side be overkill? Thanks again Rippy

I actually put one on either side of each frame rail (4 brackets total) using grade 8 bolts. I KNOW my back bumper isn't going anywhere.
