I need to build a functional rear bumper for my cj. I have a plan but what do all off you have. Just curious. Going to pull a feed trailer with less ?than 20 pounds tongue wieght and about 600 pounds. Total. Thinking about an of road camp trailer in the future though... I would post a pic off the mock up but I can't download any pics for some reason ...

I havent got to it yet but I want to go with the spare tire carrier back bumper with a receiver hitch built in and tow points like Petescj has on hishttp://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f98/81-CJ7 -Laredo -build-18126/index14.html

I have a 4x4 piece of steel tube bolted to the back of mine with an ACME bolt on receiver hitch. Trimmed the corners off for appearances, and reinforced the rear crossmember with angle iron bolted to the frame (like the pic in the post from bigtrucknut), and used grade 8 hardware to attach it.

Cheap, looks good, and strong as hell.

I had the Dring brackets made at a machine shop, but they are optional.

How about a length of angle iron? It should be bolted to the frame of course.

Torxhead showed me these same pictures when I asked a similar question and that's what I've had made too.

I think it was 58" long 3x3x1/4 angle iron, cut two 45's off the ends to save your shins and to use as gussets above the receiver. Get any receiver from Rural King / Orschlens / Tractor Supply / Farm & Fleet / Walmart - wherever.

Make sure you know how much space you have from the edge of the crossmember to the fuel tank pan so you know where to tack on the receiver.

I'll have $100 in this and it'll be strong enough to hang the Jeep by...

Thanks guys.. I am thinking the tubing style but angle iron would be the simplest and looks very functional..

OK.. now... has anybody built there own fender flares?? I have none on the back and being used most every day it gets old having mud on the windshield before I leave the yard.. need about 6 in cover.. and I don't like the price off the plastic store bought ones..

I had this stuff left over from a long time ago. Here is the same thing for sale on eBay. Universal Fender Flares Complete Set Rubber Truck Jeep Tracker 4pcs Flex | eBay
I am in no way associated with the eBay sale...it's just the same stuff. Rod

Im going to be fiddling around with the design by Metal Cloak. Im not buying theirs but this will give you an idea.

6" Jeep Rear Fender Flare, TJ/LJ/YJ/CJ

I have this on my 1982 CJ7 . It works great and has a factory-ish look to it. What I like about it is that it gets the tire carrier mounts off the body where CJ's like to rust. Plus there are tons of other companies that make aftermarket add-ons for your Hi-Lift, jerry cans, etc.

Looks nice and the added clearance will definitely help. Unless I mis- understood the link, the bottom of the page explains you can remove flair the the tight spots. Most folks have tires that stick out past the body? Anyways,I still like them and would put on. Its ashame no one makes cool cj flares though.

Yeah, that's the bumper I tried to model mine after cosmetically. If you have a good local machine shop you can get one a lot cheaper (not Warn obviously) and have it made of heavier steel. Just make sure the person you get to do it is good at what they do!

Brserk over on Jeepforum makes nice ones (groundpounder fab) and I had this one made for Dad's Scrambler by a local. He charged me $200, and the swing out tire carrier comes off if you want to remove it to ride with the tailgate down. Of course, steel was a lot cheaper then and he was doing it just to see how it would turn out.

wm69, How does your bumper mount to your jeep, on the rear cross member or to the frame? I'm working on my rear bumper and rack just wondering how you did yours.
Thanks Jeff

Looks nice, kind a along the same lines I'm working on.

Looks reasonable too, I don't have a welder (yet) so getting something made is the only option.

I'll post pics if I get them. You should post what you're making.

Old thread I know, but anyone consider purchasing from this guy?

sunrize222 on eBay

His stuff looks great and he stands by his work. I like the price too.

I like this. Think I'll try to fabricate something similar.

I can't and don't want to speak for wm69. But I have seen others that Eddie has made and he offers frame tie ins for the bumpers.
