Do the rear lights mount with the backup lights on the top or bottom?

Mine had one of each when I bought it, one lens was put on wrong, I switched it to match the other one, backup lights on top, but I think the backup light should be on the bottom.

Which way is correct from the factory, I see both ways searching the web.

if you mean just the lens. turn the key on with it in reverse and see which bulb comes on. But my 80' came with the backups on tops. my lens were on upside down when I got it.

lets not forget that one of these is your license plate light as well. so it goes on the bottom.:D

I forgot about the license plate light, I will check that.

The lens was wrong on the passenger side when I bought the Jeep.

80s Cjs the Reverse light is on top. The bottom of the driver side light housing is clear , not black , so once you turn the lights on it illuminates the plate.

Pictures will make it easier to explain. This is why the 80s Cjs have different part numbers for the 2 taillights , driver and passenger. This first shot is from the bottom , on the left is the driver, right the passenger.

The driver bottom is clear to illuminate the plate whenever the lights are on. If you put the clear part of the lens at the bottom it will appear to be in reverse when you turn on your lights.

Here you can see the three lights in the taillight assembly. The top is for the reverse light. You'll note there is a small metal divider under that light. That is there so when you engage reverse the light doesnt "bleed" into the bottom light making it look like your applying the brakes. The mid light is for the sidemarker and isnt used on earlier tailights. Earlier Cjs had the sidemarker light on the body. The bottom light is a dual filiment used for your brake and taillight. Hope this helps.
