I got my rear cage all welded in. One of my requirements for the shop was for the supertop to fit. That included the swing of the front bow. So they dabbed it up and welded in

ITS TOO LOW IN THE BACK!!!!
I am 6'1 and rub my hair on the center spreaders. If I lean back I hit on the cross bar. I mainly had this built for the kiddos which it protects quite well.

First off , I applaud your desire to do something to protect the Kids who love to ride in our Jeeps and need as much or more protection than the adults.

Did you tie any of the main hoops or structure to the chassis?

And from looking at the bends that were stretched during the bending process just what type of tubing was used? It looks more like a thin wall electric welded material which may not offer much in the form of protection.

I'm not quite sure I understand your question?

There is not allot of room back there to do much........beings your 6'1" that does complicate matters.

I can only assume that the Top in question was on / off at several times when the fabricators took there measurements and also during the process of installation to get maximum clearance while still staying within the confines of the top. And I would assume that you were also present at times during this fitting?

If they accomplished that then the clearance problem is what it is!

I would make sure that the extra tubes that surround the kid seat are far enough away that during extreme movements of the car seat the movements would never allow the child to come into hard contact with any of those.......

Without getting into detail there are better car seats available , designed more for off road use that better protect our little friends than the standard car seats we all have in our cars........these have better systems that contain these little people in the event of an upset.

Roll cage design and bracing should only be done by qualified people that either have long standing experience in the field or direct involvement in Race car design & Construction.

And for all the folks that say Our Jeeps don't need the extreme protection that say a 200 mph race car does I will partially agree but the technology born from that community applied to a 3500 lb. Jeep that rolls over a few times off a side hill can still be well used & applied!

Have the front overhead bars moved to the outside some more.
That shop should have had you in the seat, for fit-up before welding.
I would also run 1 overhead bar in the center.
LG

The cage was built by someone with experience. No adults ride back there, just the boys. I am looking at upgrading the rear seat to a high back bench. The boys' heads are below the top of the car seat. I think that would be enough clearance? I was present during measurements but after seeing what I don't like about mine, I see where it should have had some more gradual bends in the side hoops, not just a 90* bend. I guess I am just looking to feel better about the cage because it didn't turn out how I imagined.

You are planning on adding padding right? At least on the upper area. On my CJ the overhead front bars are in about the same location and it is a bit close. Keep the seatbelts adjusted tight of course.

Yes. Padding for sure. The front bars aren't too bad actually. The rear bars are just tight. What do y'all recommend for padding?

You should be able to get some at an off-road shop, or use pipe insulation sold at hardware stores, There is padding made for race cars which would be best. You could use the less expensive electrical tape or the more expensive colored roll bar tape or zip on covers. There are a few options here, check the internet, but I have been banging my head against pipe insulation and cheap electrical tape for years.

You can buy high density roll bar padding at Jegs, Summit, and several other places. Jegs will price match. Don't use pipe insulation, it compresses way to easily. You want high density stuff for that application. Is the cage tied into the frame?

A and c pillar are. Main hoop is stock.

Interesting design, I would want it higher in the back as well. You had it built to fit the soft top which it looks like it Limited the height of the rear bar. Looks like a beefy set up kids should be very safe thats whats important, now need to pad it so it doesn't hurt to hit the bars :chug:

Got it painted today. Rattle can black. I think it looks decent enough!

Looks great :chug: now some padding and your set

The B-pillar is the easiest area to tie in using some 1/4" flat steel to weld to the frame, and it would be the most important node to do since the front and rear tubes are supported by this.
Just an observation, but it appears they possibly used a pipe bender to bend tubing or a tubing bender to bend pipe, shown by the slight kinking on the bends. Not to bust on these guys but they should know better if they build many cages. Pipe and tubing are not the same in strength or size, therefore the dies for the benders are different too.

Heres a link to some padding. Not sure what size you said your bar was.
