rear wheel disk brakes rotors and calipers

rear wheel disk brakes rotors and calipers
No power steering, but it was an idea. I prefer to not have power off road, if the engine stalls it makes what would have been exciting, terrifying.

Hey IO, You are gonna do what you are gonna do but I think you would be way better off if you tried doing a hydroboost (if you dont have PS then I am a dumbo and ignore me).

I did it on my wag and the the stopping is ridiculous. If you did that you would for one spend less, have less potential for failure, still have your parking brake, and be able to stand your cj on its nose.

What is the difference IO? I have always been able to steer vehicles after they stall, all with power steering.

I usually stop for the restart if I can't bump start it. And hit the brakes.

I have not found this to be true.
it has been my observation that steering gets a whole lot harder and you can get good brakes about twice before the vacuum runs out. Maybe as I get older I will find it necessary and after I have the TBI it will not stall. Until then I have no plans to have power steering or brakes.
as some of you know I generally stick up for the Carter carburetor. I think upgrades should be made because the new carb is better, not because someone can't figure how to keep a Carter running smoothly. However there is one thing I believe that a Carter does not do well. Climb hills, I do not think it enjoys being off level. I have stalled on Hills and was unable to restart, and the trip back down was quite a thrill.
These are long held beliefs and are mine alone, I think power steering and brakes are truly wonderful things and as soon as I work out a couple of aforementioned problems they will be part of my CJ. So far I have managed to get by.:)

Now for the other question of putting an emergency brake on the TC. I think it would be easier to use or upgrade to brake calipers that have an emergency brake. The other reason is the reason that they don't use such an E brake anymore, the differential will allow one wheel to turn if one wheel starts to loose traction. You only have one wheel braking for all purposes.

no brakes is a good enough argument, i was only thinking about the steering.

for the ebrake, personally, i am not a fan of the tc style, if something breaks, it does nothing to stop the wheels, which do all of the stopping. that's just my thoughts on it

If you have a vac booster or a hydraboost both have reserves for one or two "power brakes". After that it functions no different than manual brakes. Same with powersteering. I just drove from al to il with a broken ps pump.

You should definitely source a brake booster to go with your disk brakes. I can understand not doing ps but if you source a cj brake booster it wouldn't be hard to install.

IO, I just go and put the GM calipers all the way around, there are a few companies that make plates so they work, I use the same plate for the front of a Dana 30 fits the D 44s from the 60s, I would check that if I were you but it works for me.

Bout time you stuck your head back in the room.
By plate you are referring to the plate that holds the caliper??

Bringing this tred back with a new twist. Grand Cherokee rear disc barkes
on a 86 factory Dana 44 rear end?.

Re: rear wheel dusk brakes rotors and calipers

I think that the F150's are going to be the best choice to have the right bolt center.
I do not think I have ever used a parking brake in my life. With the exception of the vehicle inspection. Just making an attempt to remain as legal as possible.

How about putting the E-brake on the rear driveshaft like the early CJ's.
A/A has a kit.

A trivia question; Why did they stop using drive shaft E brakes??
Hint; has something to do with differentials.:D

How much does this increase the length of the drive line??

Thought I would put in my 2 cents. I used ssbc disc brake conversion on my AMC20 , it works ok, but the park brake sucks. You can't clamp it tight enough to hold anything. So I put in a Mico brake on rear brake line for park brake. It is not for parking over night but works for me to get out open gates or if stalled you can lock to restart. Something different to add to the mix.

OK IO I'll bite, Why did they stop using drive shaft E brakes??

axle backing plate: 86 -89 XJ Dana 44
86 CJ7 Dana 44
86-89 Dana 35 all the same

I'm working on using 93-98 ZJ rear discs
