reasons my roter button won't turn

Broken distributor drive pin or snapped timing chain for starters. Pull the distributor out and check it 1st.
 
Put the rotor button back on and see if you can twist the shaft by hand. Sometimes you'll be able to if the pin holding the drive gear to the bottom of the shaft is broken. It happens....:(

Not always. I had a camaro shut down 2 hours from home. Had it towed and the engine rebuilt, found the timing chain was busted.
 
won't I have heard the timing chain break? It just stopped running.

Luck of the "break". Just depends on where the chain snaps in relation to the pull that's being applied to it. If the slack end has to travel all the way around the cam to get back to the crank, you could hear a lot of slapping while it's on the travel route.
