Well fellas, I'm in bad shape, worked my <-BAD WORD-> off all weekend rebuilding the tranny in my jeep (my first attempt) and something ain't right. So here goes.... got it all back together, now it won't hardly shift, even double clutching, it hangs up coming out of reverse, its clunky, and you can forget getting it back in gear while your moving. On the other hand while you are moving its quiet, no weird noises. I also put the shifter repair kit in the top side of the shifter. I used the crown master rebuild kit, and royal purple max gear synthetic 75w-90. I'm at a loss and desperate for any ideas you got.

Sorry - I have not worked on a T-176 . I'll throw out an idea though. It sounds a bit like a stuck pilot bushing. I had this happen one time on my CJ. The crank keeps spinning the tranny input shaft even when the clutch is disengaged. Or it grabs it imtermittently and gives you fits. Just an idea...

Or maybe your clutch is not disengaging all the way. Have you checked the linkage and release arm?

DSM from Jeep Forum QUOTE: Not to be the bearer of bad news, but you'd better pull it back apart and check those keys that engage the synchro rings. The stamped metal keys. There's six keys all together, 3 for 1st-2nd, and 3 for 3rd-4th. The shorter keys go in the 3rd-4th synchro assembly. If you don't have three that are shorter, it will bind exactly like you describe. As soon as you tighten the front bearing retainer, the tranny locks up in neutral. It took me 3 days to figure it out, and I was GOING to file the synchros, that was until I finally figured it out- thank God. Tranny shifts perfect now!

I think this may be your problem.

I have also seen this happen along with a bad pilot bushing.
