I currently have 15" chrome wheels and would like to paint them flat black. Do you guys have any recommendations for doing this? Sand, primer, etc? Brands, techniques, etc?

Thanks!

Best: chemically strip
Better: sand blast
Good: chemically etch
OK: sandpaper to scratch the shine off

The new paint needs some Tooth to bond to. Chrome has none. First pressure wash will re-strip it for you.

:D

ya you need get the paint to adhere to the chrome which is not the easiest have you thought about having them powder coated? it is better than paint

I hadn't given that any thought really. I was hoping for a project I could do myself fairly quick since it's my daily driver. I'll do some research. Thank you!

Ahh the beauty of flat black Wally planet .99 cents a can . Wash em,dry em , paint em, as it comes off take the can out and spray em again!! For the cost of stripping them you can almost buy new flat black rims same for powder coating. Besides that by painting them there fresh looking all the time for a buck.

can't hardly paint chrome wheels. I would sell them and buy what you want.

I didn't know powder coat would even stick to chrome. I learned something new

The best process is using an adhesion promotor, House of Color makes a great one. Muscle Car TV has a great episode demonstrating the complete process. I used the process on a chrome bumber with great results.

Go to Power Block TV website and search episode: MC2009-19

I vote fr the sell them and buy painted steel rims.

I'm with Busa and Johnny on this.

Sandblast and paint. I've had awesome results with duplicolor wheel paint (satin black) and blasting cost $50. Used this method on my xj wheels and been through sand, mud, multiple winters of salt and gravel and still look great.

Agree that buying a set of flat black steel rims would be the easiest way to go but he mentioned he was hoping to be able to do it himself in his garage and there is a process to do so and have good results. The adhesion promoter, paint and few other supplies needed will be cheaper than even a cheap set of wheels especially once you add in the cost of mounting and balancing the tires.

If you are hoping to get away with not breaking the tires down, then rattle can might be your best bet.
BUT!
With a minimal investment a guy can get into powder coating very easy. Im just wrapping up my latest build and I picked up a cheap import powder coat system, some very cool colors and textures are available on ebay, and you would love the look, durability, and lack of prep and cure time. Once you let the rim cool down from the oven, you are ready to mount the tire.
I am an old fart and have accumulated a decently equipped shop, but I wish I would have gotten into Powder coating on my last three projects.
Project size is Limited by oven size, but a 15x10 rim will fit in an old electric oven.
Granted if you had to buy everything to do the work you could probably buy new rims cheaper, but if you had access to sandblasting, powder coater and oven, you will have it for all those projects in the future.
Good Luck, Building it is 98% of the fun!:chug:

I just did this about 6 months ago. Used paint stripper to get the clear coat off. Then took wire brush to them and buffed the crome up. Then took metal etching primer, 2 coats. then flat black 2 coats. They are doing great now.
