Maybe a dumb question but...if you take a jeep, build your own frame, build your own body etc...does this affect registering the thing. Think extreme mods here, not just replacing a few things. It's not really the same vehicle, VIN numbers still apply?

It depends on state laws. If you made the jeep you are the builder.

Saying you built the vehicle may mean they will go over all kinds of safety and structural points on the vehicle.

If the vehicle is just changing hands, here in SW Colorado they only check to make sure the VIN matches the vehicle. Don't know what they would inspect it if you built the jeep.

You will have to check state laws but i would say if you can avoid saying you built the vehicle you would be better off. But then again: how many mods before you have to say you built the vehicle? Once again you would have to check local laws for that too. This can get confusing very fast.

found this on the Illinois DMV website. My question is, since the finished product will still look like a 1972 Jeep CJ5 , just with a homemade frame and body, does this apply?

“Specially Constructed Vehicle” is defined in the Illinois Vehicle Code as a vehicle of a type required to be registered that
has been materially altered from its original construction by the removal, addition or substitution of essential parts; or was
not originally constructed under a distinctive name by a generally recognized manufacturer of vehicles.

“Essential Parts” is defined as all integral and body parts of a vehicle, the removal, alteration or substitution of which
would tend to conceal the identity of the vehicle or substantially alter its appearance, model, type or mode of operation"

odd question maybe

are you doing this with a "donor" jeep?
if so couldn't you register that VIN with the MODS that you plan?

No donor, just fixing it up.I'm thinking I just won't say anything since it's already registered ...shhhhhhh....
Sounds like the way to go what they don't know wont hurt them.:chug:
