Need to replace the gas tank but not finding one that looks like the exact fit.

Mine is 24.5 X 18 3/4 X 61/4. and some show dimensions a bit bigger.

A bunch of sites show this unit Omix-Ada17720.06 but it does not look like it has a return line fitting.

here is one place that has it.
Tank, Fuel 912008

The plastic ones have the pickup on top which means re-routing fuel lines. (which i may have to do anyway)

Can anyone recommend / suggest the best replacement fit and plastic VS steel.

I see that Morris 4x4 has 3 tanks that might fit in your CJ. I don't think back then there were fuel return lines or even vent lines. Possibly fittings for those could be welded on the tank or sending unit. There are a few outfits around that can custom make a gas tank like these guys: AeroTanks-we specialize in auxiliary and replacement fuel tanks.

Thanks Torx, this one has what looks like 3/8" pickup from the bottom with 1/4" return to the top. They are rubber in places and hard lines in places. The pickup runs from the bottom of the tank to the pump, then to a filter where two lines come out. One 1/4" back to the tank, what I am calling return line, and then the other up to the carb.

It looks like some of the plastic tanks have two openings on the top, one is the pickup and is plumed and the other is just open but seems like i could make it the return. I would have to mount the fittings and run new lines to the front. I want to make new hard lines anyway although like i said in the other post i have no experience doing it.

The steel tank doesn't look like it has a return but could be the picture is generic. I assume that since it came with a return line it is required?

A fuel return line is required for a fuel injection of course, and they did come on the later model CJs and probably good for any carbed vehicle. I am not sure when Jeeps started using them though, but a vent line is critical also, since as gas exits the fuel tank a vacumn is created making it harder for fuel to be pumped out. Another option at this time would be to go to a rear mounted fuel tank, but i'm sure you have considered that.

:)Troy:

That's interesting two lines? Don't know why that would be on an original V6? I have never seen one like that. Does the second fitting into your original tank look original?........I know they did have a larger fuel line & fitting for the V-6 versus the 4-banger coming out the bottom.
The one problem with the bottom feed fuel tank is that anything that gets in there will either end up in the line or plug the opening.
That's why they started dropping the pickup in from the top in later years so they could leave the pickup off the bottom a 1/2" or so and not pick up any junk!
I'm going to look into the plastic versions for my CJ5 ............just on the surface looks like a better way to go for an under the seat tank.........but have not yet done any research.
Venting is done through the gas cap on those early Jeeps.

I have had good luck with this guy
http://the-jeep-guy.com/
He is local to me and really knows his stuff. If he doesn't have your tank listed on his site email him. He tries to keep parts in stock but can order or find most things. His shop/ store is built in his garage and just crammed full.

I'll warn you now tho.. He is a good guy but if you end up on the phone with him he its a talker. Lol

Yeah, looks very clean an stock as do the hard lines. If you google fuel filters for it most of them come up with two outlets. But none of the metal tanks come with the second hole although some, not all, of the poly ones do.

I like the look of the metal ones better but like the idea of the poly ones too. Heck this metal one lasted 48 years that should do it for me!

I found a metal one in town so I am leaning that way. I have to decide if I will add the return line or opt to leave it out and change the filter to single out option.

Does anyone have any reason not to?

Thanks Spikey, I will take a look. I have one of those talkers here too. When I first got the CJ I had the tranny looked at, took me an extra hour to get out of the shop.

:)Troy,
I can't see why a second line would be needed........carburetor and a needle and seat at the float controlling fuel........why a bypass? I have no Idea............fuel injection or a diesel Yes............
And you say the fitting at the tank looks original and goes in the top?
I've got a buddy up your way in Somerset,CA. that has an original 66 with a V-6.......I'll check with him and see how his is set up.

Awesome Tarry thanks.

Yes looks neet and clean, comes up near the filler neck, there is a perfect hole in the bottom of the tub with a grommet up into a 90 mounted to the top of the tank. It also must have a tube attached because I used it to drain the tank, must have had a siphon, and it took about 7 gallons out of the tanks so it must have had a tube running down.

Hello.
I need to replace the tank on my 1976 CJ5 . I only use it to plow at home, so I'd like to do it for cheap/free. If I use a jerry can or tank, what do I do with the vent hoses - especially the liquid vent lines?

Hey Bret, not sure as mine is older and is vented through the cap.

I don't like messing with fuel systems too much so I would look for a cheep replacement tank vs a J-can.
