Replacing my Fuel Tank

I just bought a 1982 CJ5 , and i need to replace the fuel tank. I looked on jcwhitney and it looks like a new on cost upwards of $130. I had heard thank i can use a tank from a jeep cherokee.?
I plan on looking in local junkyards for parts and didn't know if this would work or if maybe there are other alternatives.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the poly tank. Well worth the money. No more rust!

I just don't think a Cherokee tank will bolt in.

Just about the only tank that will just bolt in would be from a CJ.
On the other hand there may be dozens of tanks that could be made to fit with some modifications.
If you have to go to a salvage yard I wouldn't settle for anything other than a CJ tank. Actually you never seem to get very good deals from salvage yards. I am looking to replace my 15 gallon with a 21. I saw one at a salvage yard but he was asking over $200! Granted it came with the mounting straps and sending unit but I can get a new for not more than that. Here's one for $260

Now, back to the $130 tank you found. That sounds like a very good price.

Poly really is the way to go, especially if you go with the larger tank. The CJ tanks are just GROSSLY undersized.

i dropped the tank out of my 76 cj and thought i was going to have to replace it ...looked inside and no rust what so ever.. i was going to go with the poly but now that i know the tank is good i will just stick with it
