Hello, bought a 84 CJ7 about 2 yrs ago. Put a 2 1/2 lift on it. Webber carb. Interested in swapping a v8 in and a auto Transmission . Is there anyone here that has experience dropping a chevy 5.3, auto Transmission in.? Is there any books or DVD that shows the steps to ??

Google is your friend. that swap has been done a few hundred times. Companies like Novak sell complete engine mount swap kits. By 5.3 I assume your looking at a Fuel injected LS motor, If so you will need all the electronics from the donor truck unless your pockets are deep enough to buy a brand new wiring harness. IMHO your better off sending the stock one out to be thinned down. As for the auto you need to investigate the length difference between your current Transmission and Transfer Case and the auto you want to use. keeping in mind that every inch longer your new combo is the more drastically your drive line angle will change. even 2-3 inches will give you a major head ache in the end.

A much easier and less expensive swap would be to use a AMC 304 or 360 AMC. Just an idea for you. :chug:

Well, just re-read your post. Since you want to go automatic, my suggestion may not be that beneficial.

Here's where the flogging starts. Guys will jump in and say you should keep a jeep a jeep and go with a AMC 304 or 360 for a V-8 swap. Normally I would agree but more recently I think I'm leaning towards the chevy transplant. Here's why

1) relatively cheap
2) FI
3) tons of after market parts for it
4) obdii. Can easily have it scanned to see what the issue is ic it's running wrong
5) gas milage
6) stock form doubles the horse power rating of a 360.

Here's my reason for keeping it a AMC motor
1) it's a amc motor.

There's my .02 by the way all my jeeps have been AMC powered but I'd no issue putting a 5.3, 5.7 or even 6.0 in one. I'm actually hoping my 2500 hd gets t-boned so I can use the drive train for a waggy swap.

I have had several jeeps with small block chevys over the years and love the extra power. At present I have 2 CJ7 's with full chevy running gears..both have carbed 350's,because even though I was an electronic tech in the navy,I like simple wiring in my jeeps..both have 350 turbo transmissions..1 has a divorced Transfer Case and axles from a 69 1/2 ton gmc. wheelbase is stock on it..the other has a np208 and 1 ton axles out of a 87 ,1 1/4 ton military chevy p/u..wheelbase on it is stretched about 14 inches..this one is my favorite jeep of all time

thanks for the response. Looking forward it to warming up and rally dive into this project this year. Has anyone seen manuals on how to swap a chevy v8 into a CJ7 or wrangler ??
