Vehicle(s)
1974 CJ5, 304v8... purchased 8/8/11
Will a 3.73 Dana 30 ring and pinion (41-11) from a Jeep Grand Cherokee fit a 1974 CJ5 with same dana and 41-11 ring and pinion...?
Didnt know if there were any physical differences in ring\pinion\carrier or case?
thanks for any info..Ed

Go to Randy's Ring and Pinion website. They don't have a crossreference guide, but they offer part numbers. Search for each vehicle and see if the numbers come up the same.

Quick question from a newbie :

Do the front and rear diff's require the same ratios

If I were to change the AMC20 to 410, what do I need to do to the front Dana 30 ?

Thanks

Yes. There is a slight variance allowed but it has to be within 3%.

Why 4.10's? Are you going to use it off road? If so, maybe go bigger.

I am going to use it for off road but I also want to be able to drive to some destinations. I run 33's and won't be going to 35's. I can now use my Overdrive when at speed on flat, so I figure the Overdrive would be more useful with the 4.10's

gonna sound silly but you can also put bigger tires in the rear (defeats the purpose of lower gears) and still be able to drive it with the different ratios. My jeep came stock with 2;72 gears and 28" tires. Ive regeared to 3:55 and 35" tires and the speedo is almost right on. I think it ended up being a 4% difference or.. at 25 Im actually going 24. So in theory you can run different ratios as long as your tires make up the difference.

I agree, with 33 inch tires you should use 4.1 to 4.56 gearing. Use this chart and shoot for the green.

I still think they might be a bit too low for you. I had a CJ5 with 33's and a 5 speed which had 4.10's and I could never use 5th gear. It was just a bit too much. I also had a spring over and a 2.5L 4 cyl.

My second Jeep was a 2003 Rubicon, which I swapped to 4.88's with 33's and it was just right, but then I could only cruise at 65. The mileage increased though.

If you ran 4.30's or even 4.56's, you could still run around on the roads, but you would be MUCH better off road.

Most of the newer Dana 30 's were high pinion and even reverse rotation so most likley you cannot use the gears from the grand cherokee.

Kane, I did go to Randy's ring and pinion and the partnumber listed for my 74 with Dana 30 3.73 for a ring and pinion was the same number listed for the 95 Grand Cherokee....so I found a good used deal and bought it...upon further examination the Grand Cherokee pinion shaft where the small shims would slide on was slightly larger in diameter that my CJ5 pinion shaft....although I could probable fin some correct inside diameter small shims I have decided not to go with that particular R & P setup from the cherokee....so it is now for sale in this site classifieds, hoping someone else may be able to use it.
