Throwing this up here. Tomorrow I will be embarking on a 1200 mile trip in the CJ7 with my Vtx1800 in tow on a trailer. I have spent the last year trying to get the jeep right so I of course hope that it is in good enough shape to not break down.

As a precaution, however, I will bring my towbar for the jeep bumper. I will be traveling I 81 south from PA to Virginia where I will hop on 77 south to Charlette NC where I will switch over to 85s towards Atlanta.

Once I hit Atlanta I am close enough that I could stand by and wait of family from Mobile to get to me if anything should go wrong, but if anyone lives near that corridor that may be able to offer a tow to a shop in the event something goes wrong please let me know.

Covering my bases JIC.

Made it to Bristol va before the wheel on the trailer exploded. Luckily no one was hurt. All the hardware stores and tractor supply are of course conveniently closed so looks like I'm staying the night in Bristol.

Hope you didn't lose one of your chairs or that squashed red can ... :) ... but seriously, I'm glad your jeep is serving you well. Those little tires take quite a beating on the highway, I hope you get a spare or maybe two while your at it. Tractor supply has a bunch of pre-mounted tires of that type.

Ha ha. What is everyone's preoccupation with those chairs ! lol. Everyone keeps commenting on them ha ha.

I hope I'm not the only one in visioning a passenger riding in the chair with a Mohawk, football pads, flight googles, and swinging a med-evil spiked ball on the end of a chain.....traffic beware!
Think Mad Max !!!!!

Seriously though, hit me up when you get here. We'll grab a beer and burger. I want to check out what all did to the Jeep since I had it.

Si.
The body count:
New fuel pump in West Va
New trailer tires and hubs in Va
New tps in GA

The TPS and fuel pump were relatively new no?

Man do I feel stupid, That is a "TPS"? .... I've heard several people say that those little trailer tires are not good for long trips. Sorry for your troubles, glad you made it in mostly one piece.

Throttle position sensor. For that new fangled fuel injection stuff. :)

Re: Road Trip from Philly to Mobile Alw

Is there a story that led up to replacing those items?

A story behind the breakdowns would be nice to read.

I've always wanted to do a cross-country road trip in my CJ, but I guess i was too chickens**t. :)

Thanks Peter - the only throttle body sensor I know of is my foot on the gas pedal. Do TBS's go out frequently?

Not really an interesting one. I am not sure the tps was bad or even if the fuel pump was bad. The ecu is throwing a faulty o2 and tps code.

It started after a long period on the highway the jeepcould not keep up at high speeds higher rpms and would start bucking until it eventually stopped. It was acting like it was not getting fuel pressure.

I think that the o2 fault is making me run lean, over heating the exhaust and possibly causing a vapor lock issue in the pump on the rear frame rail.

After having issues a quick stop on the side of the road for a few minutes seems to make the issue subside for a few hundred miles. The issue seems to come back when climbing extreme inclines that require WOT.

When everything is working right, Pete. I have to say that in cruise and in fifth the jeep was able to maintain speeds of over 75 on most inclines with a trailer and a 20 cubic foot luggage carrier on the roof without down shifting.

I've never had a problem with any vehicle I've owned that has a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), even the one that came with the Howell kit.

Any sensor or part can potentially go bad. It's nice to have a computer that can tell you what might be wrong.

Having an engine cut out on an uphill grade sounds pretty serious to me, getting a lean trouble code does could be a fuel delivery issue. Having a good fuel tank vent system and making sure the fuel pickup sock is clean can be factors here. When I want to check my O2 sensor, I plug in a digital voltmeter to it and look for a .9 volt variance while driving. You really went for quite a shakedown cruise.
