drain the oil out and if you see any debris than you'll know that the pinion has worn into the ring gear, which could cause the noise. Could be a bearing, could plenty of other things. If you see debris, pull the ring gear off and have a shop magnaflux the ring a pinion. If they don't see any big cracks then put it back in. You'll be able to check the bearings while it's out as well.
